YIKES. The atypical weather earlier in the season has created, what seems to be, the "perfect storm" in the bug world here in the Okanagan. From termites to ants, to spiders, and to the dreaded wasps and hornets (our mortal enemies), populations seem to be on overdrive (here at BugMaster, it feels like we are under siege!). With huge nests popping up everywhere, we've been getting a lot of calls in - many of you have been asking "is this something I can or should deal with o...n my own?". Truthfully, the answer isn't always a simple yes or no. Here are our recommendations: When NOT to tackle wasps and hornets on your own: - If you don't have proper safety gear. First and foremost, if you don't have the proper safety attire then absolutely don't try this at home, folks. - If the nest is large and very active (lots of foragers coming in and out) - If there are restrictions (height or access) causing for unsteady wielding of ladders or the need to be in a tight, enclosed space (crawlspace, attic) with only 1 exit. If you are unsure, check WCB guidelines. - Lastly, if your Culprit-At-Large is black and white resembling the image below: please do NOT attempt to destroy the nest on your own! As more and more people in our community are at home in self-isolation, laid off, or staying with their littles due to school closures, we recognize that pest control may still be an urgent, essential service.
