Kim Barlow Band 14.05.2021

When her first album came out, some of my dearest songwriter friends went crazy for it (AnneLouise Genest, Natalie Edelson ). I liked it too but couldn't understand why she played all her songs soooo sloooow. I couldn't slow down that much at that time in my life and music. Now I get it. Ahead of their time, her and Rawlings and still are. This music - some of the most beautiful sounds and space, and the most evocative writing around. I am often surprised that more people don't know this. Thanks for reminding me, Terra M Spencer.

@jahmilasings is giving a talk on Sunday afternoon before her show., hosted by MIC and @deeprootsmusic . 1pm @alwhittletheatre Studio Z . We’re making it free b...ecause we don’t want you to miss it! Msg to register. Here’s how she describes what it’s all about: "Using my own experiences as a reggae artist, I will share my views on meaningful creativity. I will use reggae as an example to explore the ways that art impacts reality and, conversely how reality impacts art. I will examine my personal artistry as well as those of others, to analyze various approaches to music and songwriting. Is it self-serving, or done in service of others? How are people impacted by it? Is it an instrument for social awareness, and change? In this workshop, I hope that all present can participate in deep and thought provoking discussions about how creativity influences culture and vice versa. Alright. Maybe this ig is going to have more music on it again bc, inspired by @samwilsonmusiq and @onewandarian and other improvisers and guitarists I admire, I’m challenging myself to post some solo guitar ideas. This clip is the end of a long, largely frustrating ramble but it felt real settled at the end. Peace. #musicforhealing #listen #woodandvibrations

Not kids or garden related, but kind of amazing that this is happening. Live-stream, too, for my far-away friends. @musicincommunities for details #christmaswithmeasha

I am so very pleased to announce that I received a grant from Canada Council for the Arts | Conseil des arts du Canada to support a run of shows and improvising sessions this winter. Through the Music In Communities Co-op, we’ll host a small, safe show every two weeks at the Al Whittle Theatre featuring some fantastic open-spirited and creative musicians from our area and other parts of the Atlantic Bubble. We will also be collaborating with various groups to host music work...shops and improvising sessions for kids, youth at risk, differently-abled folks, and other members of our community. I am so excited to get to work on this! Especially now. The pandemic has made it harder for people to play music together, and more than ever, we need to get better at improvising our way to a workable future. These music events help expand our thinking, put joy back into our days, and bring our community together in small but important ways. We’ll follow or excede all Covid guidelines and keep things as safe as possible, while we make things happen. Our first public events are coming up soon, and more details will be posted here so check back. Message me for more info about any of these, and other events in the works. Starting Oct. 14, we’re collaborating with the Alexander Society for Inclusive Arts to host Jam Dances on some Wednesday mornings, for anyone who wants to join (limit 10). more details soon! Oct. 17, Brian Borcherdt and I will be at Ross Creek Centre for the Arts as part of their Autumn Arts programming, doing songwriting and electronic music jamming for ages 16 and up. Participants are welcome to stay afterwards to hear the first session of the improvising ensemble being created for the series. Oct. 24, Heather Kelday, Brian Borcherdt and youth assistant Peter Fisk will host a youth workshop at the Kentville Recreation Centre, 1-5 pm, ages 11-17. Saturday October 31 - MIC presents New Hermitage at the Al Whittle Theatre, special Halloween show, improvised music for silent horror films! 8pm, $15/pwyw message to reserve tickets There’s lots more coming! All subject to last-minute changes in changing times. Improvising is the name of the game, and we’re honing our skills. I came up with the idea for this project partly as a way to honour my late friend and mentor Justin Haynes. I don’t want to forget the things I learned from him, so I hope this will help perpetuate those lessons and pass them on to others. He was a no-bullshit dude and he would probably squirm at the earnestness of this post, but then again he probably should have listened to me more often. I’m determined to keep working to honour his legacy. Justin: eye-roll.
