Good evening everyone. Mother nature again was not very nice to us today. This months Rotary highlights the addition of the environment to Rotary's official causes. The picture below is beautiful but hides the fact that this shore in Bali is polluted from heavy marine traffic and the air was not so good in 2005. What does adding the environment mean to Rotary Clubs? It means that there are grants available for this area of focus under these guidelines.... Restoring habitat, planting native vegetation and removing invasive plant and animal species. Protecting endangered species and preventing illegal wildlife trade Addressing overfishing, pollution and coastal erosion. Educating Communities in conservation and resource management Supporting eco-friendly agriculture and sustainable fisheries. Promoting the use of traditional and Indigenous knowledge in resource management. Supporting the transition to energy-efficient transportation Eliminating exposure to environmental toxins Reducing food waste. These grants are for larger scale projects that require community assessment and must be sustainable. If this interest you or your club more info is on Rotary.org/environment. Other Rotary areas of focus are: Water and Sanitation, Fighting diseases, Education and Mother-child. The magazine also highlights several projects that are on going that cover more than one of these areas including the environment. The environment has been a part of many projects just not official. This came about because of Rotarian interest and work to make it official. Remember Rotary is member driven. Food for thought Helga

Altruists- the dictionary defines it as a principle of living and acting for the good of others. Good Samaritans, do gooders, volunteers or Rotarians, it has become painfully clear that there are not enough altruists during hard times like the pandemic. Many of our volunteers are older, we see them selling tickets, working at the hospital thrift shop or the food bank. It often seems it, is the same group of people over and over again. During the pandemic many are no longer...Continue reading

Imagine losing everything to a disaster, Earthquake, Hurricane, Flood or as a conflict refugee. The rotary "boots on the ground arrive" to take names, give com...fort and clear roads and accesses. Aid begins to arrive including Shelter Box first responders. It is there job to co-ordinate efforts with levels of government, local rotary and other aid agencies. If you have nothing the shelter box with the tent and other necessities is a life saver and gives you hope and dignity to see you through to recovery. First responders go through a rigorous screening and training process. This area has 2 Shelter Box responders who give up several weeks a year to be on call for an emergency. Check out the Shelter Box Site or the post for the Christmas Campaign for details like the Tool kit for use when there is damage that can be repaired. One thing that the responder would decide is how many boxes and how many kits are needed. They would also work with locals to seek out and clear areas for pitching the tents, Seek out source water, Plan latrine and cooking areas. And once they boxes start arriving they would train locals how to set them up. Sound like a lot of work right. That's why they work in teams and are there for a limited time and replaced by another team if required. At the Fall fair (as displayed ) we were asked lots of interesting questions . One that always caught my attention was: was shelter box ever used in Canada? We are lucky in Canada in that most towns and municipalities have emergency plans in place with things like group housing. As we found out during the Kelowna Firestorm of 2003 there can come a time when group housing can be inadequate. Shelter box tents were brought in to give housing and privacy to displaced persons who had special needs such as pregnancy. Unlike when shelter box goes into other countries the tents were reused. Normally they are left in the area to be reused by locals or recycled. Teams have gone to sites to find the tents still standing and being used many years later. Closer to home during the 2013 High River floods first responders lent there skills to set up temporary trailer parks when residents pack up there trailers and had no where to go with everything full. Detains such as water, shower and sani- dumps needed to be arranged. So supporting an agency that does most of its work overseas does not mean we are not supporting local. Supporting local first responders in their own mission and giving can also help us when disaster strikes closer to home. Helga Logan

I hope everyone this morning took time out to remember and say thank you for your service. The eleventh day of the eleventh month on the eleventh hour, where does this come from. November 11th at 11am on 2018 is the official time of the end of World War 1, the war to end all wars. Never again was the motivation for the forming of the League of Nations. History tells us they were not effective and unable to prevent WW2 and were disbanded in 1940. The league was important bec...ause the idea and lessons learn carried into the United Nations. Rotary did not take a stand during the war and was criticized for it. President Walter D Head wrote: Rotary is based on the ideal of service, and where freedom, Justice, truth, sanctity of the pledged word and respect for human rights do not exist, Rotary cannot live nor its Ideal prevail. Many Clubs in occupied lands disbanded and were forced underground. Members and clubs were persecuted because of race, religion and beliefs. The ideals did not go well with current occupational government. Many Rotarians served. In 1942 a group of Rotarians and friends met in London to plan for peace. Representatives of 21 nations attended this meeting, from which UNESCO evolved. (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization founded 1945). Rotary had begun its work towards lasting peace. In 1949, 49 Rotarians participated in the United Nations Charter Conference in San Francisco. Working on the UN's Economic and Social Council and as independent consultants. Because of this service Rotary each year appoints Rotarians to work with the UN. Rotary holds the highest Non Government status with ECOSOC that oversees many UN Agencies. Rotary International appoints Representatives to the UN and is the only NGO that has an actual council seat. These Representatives work to increase awareness of Rotary programs, Policies and Activities. They also work as an exchange of information and concerns. Rotary day at the Un each November, Rotary International organizes presentations, brings in speakers and exhibits to promote collaboration with UN Organizations. Rotary International continues to promote peace through programs such as Student exchanges, Friendship exchanges and Peace Scholarships . Rotary's answer to war is peace. We now enjoy the peace that was won on the battlegrounds and in the council rooms that followed. It is important work that must continue lest we forget. Thank you Helga Logan

On the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour we remember all those who serve. For those who are currently serving we wish them well as they remember fallen comrades. For those who have served and are still with us, we wish you well as you honor those who served with you. For those who lost their lives serving for our freedom, we remember. Even though we are absent this year we remember with you. Take a minute of Silence on the 11day of the 11th hour at the 11 minute to remember. Helga Logan

In past years Graham Mann our past Shelterbox ambassador and helpers could be found at the local fall fair, giving presentations to schools and other clubs with the tent and equipment. These are not an option this year. The Facebook ad for the Christmas Gift Giving is the only solution open to us this year. Please take time to review the ad and give if you can. Kimberley has received the Gold Hero Award for Donations for many years mostly through Graham's efforts and Pat B...arclay is our new ambassador with a very tough job. On an earlier post I mentioned that members have the ability to present ideas for projects to a club. This is how shelterbox started with the Rotary Club of Helston Lizard looking for a millennium project. They had hoped to help 8-10 families with a tent, sleeping bags, cooking utensils and other items. First they investigated what items were needed and the logistics of getting it there. They then promoted it at the annual Rotary International Convention and ended up getting $88,000 Pounds in donations. They need to think bigger. The first response was to the 2001 earthquake in Gugarat India and by 2003 they were a registered Charity run by the members of the Helston Lizard Club. By 2012 Shelterbox became a Rotary Partner with the benefit of rotary connections and fundraising assisting to grow internationally. Their mission: to provide emergency shelter to families who have lost their home to disaster, enabling them to rebuild their lives Shelterbox was in Indonesia and Srilanka in 2004 assisting with the homeless after the earthquake and Tsunami where 250,000 lost their lives. They were in Haiti in 2010 after the devastation there. They have been to the Philippines so often because they are on the "ring of Fire" that they now have a permanent warehouse there. The Philippines alone can have up to 20 Typhoons a year, Earthquakes, Volcanic eruptions and monsoon flooding. They have also been in Syria since 2012 providing shelter to those displaced by conflict. In 2020 there are about 104 million people living without shelter after disaster. Check out there web site for more information. Shelterbox.org or www.shelterboxcanada.org.

Here is a way to honour a special person on your Christmas Gift List. The knowledge that your gift is providing aid to a family devastated by conflict or natural disaster - help that will provide safe shelter or other survival resources. The fact that someone far away cares, means more than can be imagined, it is a true Christmas gift.

Good Evening. Hoping everyone is well and trying to cope with the new rules. I want to thank Pat for the poster thanking essential workers for their service. I am very grateful when I am shopping for 3 households, taking everyone to appointments and most importantly when my Dad and Daughter were in the hospital in September. To all the essential workers in our area thank you!!!! This Wednesday our guest for our Go to Meeting were representatives from Teck. We had a present...ation on the history of the Sullivan mine, the reclamation process and on going work being done in our area. You can view this at www.teck.com. /operations / legacy / Sullivan. We also received a grant from Teck along with Columbia Basin Trust and the Rotary Foundation which has funded the Marysville Walkway engineering study. As reported at the business meeting, some member and our engineers met with the City of Kimberley. They support this project and several issues were cleared, most important was the sewer line that runs under the current walkway. Apparently it is a minor line and no plans have been made to alter it in the near future. It is not part of the city planned sewer project. Also the planned route, leveling for wheelchair use and safe measures have so far met their approval. Since the city is currently responsible for maintenance and will be once the overhaul is done there will be many more meetings so the project meets all requirements before proceeding. The City also mentioned that maintenance and wear on the bridge was the reason they paved the path down from the street. There is still a lot of work to be done before the project given final approval from the members. Once the approval and go ahead is given we will start fundraising. So stay tuned. Helga Logan

Under the heading we wish some one had told us the first time, is the fact that a service club can not be a Charity. Lost time waiting can not be redeemed. Ok we got that in August 2014 an we could really apply for the bigger grants. Remember we were looking at raising 300k and at the start we had about 25k from Lobsterfest and the parent group. Sandra and her team was in charge of Grant Writing do a super job getting 60% of the funding. She even got us involved with the ...Kraft Challenge. We did not win that one but it got the community behind the project. Sandra is has moved to a different rotary and Al has now taken on this role for the Marysville project. Keyboards and pens are flying and the applications are going out. According to the engineers we are looking at 250k so there is a lot of work to do in these challenging times. Everyone in the club is keeping eyes and ears tuned for opportunities. Graham Mann was director of Advertising, Marketing and Club booster. About 10 % was raised from small business and the remaining 30% from Fundraising and general public donations. Lobsterfest was the main fundraiser for the club with Graham coming up with the big auction items. Pat started the grad challenge which expanded the scope to people who grew up here. While these required a lot of work from the entire club. The fun and fellowship brought the group together We had to cancel Lobsterfest this year and did not get to do any fund raising. Hoping next year is better may not cut it. Right now we are tying to come up with alternatives like most of the other groups in town. If this looks like something you might be interested in come an join the club we are looking for new members, no experience required just lots of enthusiasm. After all we now have a bean counter doing these posts taking advantage of the opportunity to expand my skills. By the way that is also a good reason to join a club.
