Here’s my ode to wide open spaces! If the frigid temps and a pandemic have you feeling cooped up and more than a little stir crazy, take a deep breath and imagine yourself surrounded by the wide open prairie landscapes. I did that yesterday (black and white pic) when I just stopped and took a moment to appreciate my surroundings and that inspired this post. (We trudged through that field to try to get pics of a beautiful snowy owl on top of a grain bin, but it flew away befo...re we could get close enough. Oh well, it was amazing to witness!) Take a few normal breaths, then take slow, deep breaths. In through your nose, out through your belly kind of breaths. Feel the difference in your body. Re-frame your thoughts. There is a lot to be anxious and upset about right now. Focus on what you can change for the better in your immediate environment. What’s one thing you can do to feel better? And then follow through.... Go for a walk, talk to someone, watch adorable animal videos, do one thing you’ve been putting off...if you don’t feel up to handling the big things on your to do list, do the small things. This mantra have been essential to my well-being this year. I learned early on if I did my doom scrolling before my daily walk, I could work out my stress and anxiety about the pandemic. The walking before supper ritual also became a nice way to transition from day to evening. And because I have something to look forward to at the end of the day, it makes my work days more productive. Do you have a mantra? As a kid on the prairies, my family travelled long distances all over Saskatchewan to visit our relatives. As we approached towns, I’d look for the iconic Sask Wheat Pool grain elevators to tell me what town was next, calculating how close our destination was. Sadly, there aren’t too many left now. This one in the hamlet of Horizon is perfect! What a special place, as I walked up and down the two streets where not much exists anymore of what was once apparently a thriving lit...tle village, it felt alive in my imagination. The pandemic sucks, I mean how else can you say it? But we’ve explored much of southern Saskatchewan on weekends and summer evenings, packing snacks and lunches, to find interesting scenes to photograph and to appreciate the beauty and history of our province.
