From the Social & Ecological Justice Commission, Shining Waters Regional Council: On Thursday, April 8, at 12.30 p.m. on the eve of the Liberal National Convent...ion, The United Church of Canada will be inviting Canadians across the country to light a candle in support of a guaranteed livable income, often referred to as the guaranteed basic income. The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened the importance of health and well-being of the entire community and exposed the cracks in the current economic situation. Building on the positive experience of the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), this is a unique opportunity to make an important policy change to ensure greater income security for all Canadians. Plan to light a candle, take a picture, and post it to social media (#UCCanlivableincome, #guaranteedlivableincome #basicincome #SWRC). You can also tag Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (@justinpjtrudeau) and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland (Instagram @chrystiafreeland and Facebook @freelandchrystia). If you are not able to light a candle but would like to participate, you can use the ready-made graphic attached to this post. If you are not a regular social media user, take a photo and email it to Bri-anne Swan, [email protected]. Feel free to include a note. Bri-anne will post your photos to the Regional Council’s social media pages. To bring additional visibility to this event, small vigils will be held on April 8 at 12:30 p.m. local time: in Ottawa at the Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill, in front of Chrystia Freeland’s constituency office in Toronto, and at numerous other constituency offices across the country. Due to the current COVD-19 pandemic, these will be closed vigils limited to locally designated individuals in line with provincial public health outdoor event limits, and plans will be adjusted as needed. For those interested in holding a vigil at your local MP's constituency office, please contact Susan Eagle, chair of the Social & Ecological Justice Commission, at [email protected].
