Third assignment, Advanced Painting NSCAD University, Winter 2020. Third and final assignment was a "free project". This included a move from School studio to a quasi home studio. COVID 19, posed some challenges that were worked through.

In the Summer of 2016, I attempted to capture in a painting the graciousness of a very powerful animal as a young person sough a connection, and pride that her ...human companion felt toward this beautiful creature. Some time later I was fortunate enough to meet up with this duo, Brent and Baylee Bates, and they graciously agreed to a photo shoot and sketching session. Baylee retired and Brent was transferred to Saskatchewan and I still had not produced any works from our brief time together. My hesitation, was in part, due to the fear that I would not be able to capture the powerful beauty of Baylee. Add the difficulty of depicting a bond that all humans hope to develop with their pet, but few attain to such a level as it was evident that these two had. Baylee has physically passed from our world, yet she will continue too live on in all who had the pleasure of meeting her. The loss to her human companion must be tremendous, a heartbreak that goes with unconditional love. My second attempt at capturing Baylee and Brent, again falls just short. How can one create a physical representation of a beautiful expression of companionship? It is my hope that Brent will heal from his loss knowing that Baylee will live on with him, with us. See more
