Making a change is hard; creating new habits takes too much time; I want to do something new, but I don’t know where to start... do any of these sound familiar?? When I was a child, I was an avid reader, often reading the same books over and over because I enjoyed them so much! In fact, legend has it that my Nana taught me to read before I entered kindergarten! But as I entered adulthood, got married, got a job, started a family, the time that I would have set aside for ...reading got used for other things. And then along came Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and my reading time was spent surfing the web or scrolling through social media. But I missed my books I would longingly look at new novels that had been released, but never picked them up because I just felt that I did not have enough time. Enter Deanna Villella who started a book club and invited me to join in January, and enter my step daughter Brianna Blahut who introduced me to Audible so that I could listen to books. In order to get back in the habit of reading I promised myself 15 minutes a day to read. Of course, once I got into that habit, the love of reading came roaring back and while I don’t read every day, I now magically find the time to do it. And using Audible, I can listen to a book in my car. So my commute to and from work allow me for almost a full hour of reading!!! I set a goal of 24 books this year and I’m already at 10 ! Suddenly a new habit was formed! And it all started with just a small step in the right direction, a commitment to myself and a little bit of time. Do you have a new habit that you want to start? Stepped on the scale this morning! For many of us, that has the potential to be a frightening and disheartening moment, but I always do so with a sense of curiousity. Today I learned that I did not gain a single pound over the holidays! How did I do it you ask? By following the guiding principles of the WildFit program. I will tell you honestly that I did not starve myself, or deny myself anything that I did not want. I even had a few cookies and a glass or two of win...e. What I did not do was overindulge nor did I waiver from my rule of making sure I have more good things on my plate than bad things. Generally I spend Sunday afternoons making soup, it's become a family tradition. This past weekend I made a crockpot split pea soup with just a few items. 2 cups of split peas 6-8 cups of chicken or vegetable broth 1 ham hock... 1 onion a couple of carrots minced garlic (because everything should have garlic in it!) Cook on low for 8 hours or so. Remove the ham hock and blend with an immersion blender as smoothly as you like (you can mash with with potato masher as well, for more texture) I will take the ham off the ham hock bone and toss it back into the soup once it's blended. Add salt and pepper to taste. Why is it that everytime I say "no" to something sugary, or I add more salad to my plate, someone asks if "I'm on a diet"? Why can't "eating healthy" just be normal and accepted behaviour? Sometimes I think it is because when others see me making better choices, they feel guilty about their poor one, and, even if unintentional, they try to sabotage me. When we're stressed, the immune system's ability to fight off antigens is reduced. That is why we are more susceptible to infections. The stress hormone corticosteroid can suppress the effectiveness of the immune system . Practice breathing techniques. Here's a good one: breathe in to the count of 5, hold for a count of 5, and then release for a count of 5. You wake up in the morning, and the first thing you reach for is a cup of hot coffee. If you have time, maybe you have a second cup. And then you realize that you don’t feel hungry, so you skip breakfast. By mid morning, there are a few hunger pains, but you drown them out with another cup of coffee. Need an afternoon snack, have another coffee. Does this sound familiar? Caffeine triggers a stress response in our bodies which stimulates a message to our body that danger... is near. This is commonly called the fight or flight response. Think about it - if your body is on high alert, looking for danger and ready to fight or run for you life, do you think it is also looking for a snack at the same time? Probably not! Your appetite is suppressed because your body is stressed. Some people use this hack to cheat hunger with coffee, thinking that they will lose weight. But the reality is, you are not creating an environment where your body feels that it is safe to do so. It’s only going to continue to hang on to excess fat and weight, and at the same time, you are depriving your body of the nutritional resources it needs. Do you: Start a new 'fad' diet, but quit after two days because it's too hard? Buy the latest smartwatch (the one that tracks your exercise) but get bored with it within the week? Join the gym but stop going after three weeks (but don't cancel the membership!) Read all the blogs and FB posts on healthy eating, but never try any of the ideas?... And then Christmas comes, and you make that New Year Resolution that this year will be different! You really start to take care of your health... for about two weeks. Life gets in the way and stress starts to build up, you feel your energy fading, but you just don't have time for this. And six months later, you are still stuck. And then summer comes, and the cycle starts all over again. You can stay on the rollercoaster, or you can focus on fixing the #1 underlying problem that prevents you from living a healthy lifestyle. And that is that you can't rely on willpower or internal motivation to create and stick to healthy habits. Why?? I heard a radio commercial today telling me that it was Pumpkin Spice Latte Season, and that I MUST have one !! Who decided it was no longer the season of Fall?? If you MUST have a Pumpkin Spice Latte, then at least have one that is reasonably more healthy than one ordered at your local coffee shop. Try this (for one serving):... 1 cup of non-dairy milk 1 tbsp of pumpkin puree Honey to taste 1/2 tsp cinnamon pinch of nutmeg pinch of ground ginger 3/4 cup of coffee Add the milk and puree to a small pot; heat over medium-low heat, constantly stirring with a whisk until it begins to simmer. Add in the honey, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger. Whisk until it becomes frothy. Add the coffee to a large mug and pour the milk mixture on top. When people go on a 'diet', the perception is that they are eating bland food but the reality it, to lose weight and become more healthy, it is better to become more mindful of what you eat. This means still eating yummy food, just being more creative about it! Looking for a drink to warm you up? One of my favourites: Tumeric Latte. Ingredients 2 cup almond milk (500 ml)... 1 tsp turmeric powder 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 2 tbsp maple syrup Instructions Pour the milk into a saucepan and cook over high heat until it’s hot, but don’t bring it to a boil. Remove from the heat and add the rest of the ingredients. Stir and try the milk, add more milk, turmeric, cinnamon or syrup if needed. You can use a milk frother to get a better texture, but it’s optional. The sweet taste of sugar is more rewarding than the high of cocaine. You see, sugar produces dopamine a happy, feel-good chemical in the brain. People get addicted to eating sugar, to the point where they need it to feel normal and they undergo withdrawal if they cut sugar from their diets.
