COVID-19 has certainly risen some concerns around disease transmission risks between people and their pets. However, our pets carry many germs that have potential to spread to us which is why hand hygiene is ALWAYS important, not just for COVID-19. Look who came to visit me this weekend . Did you know Opossums eat up to 5,000 ticks in one year? They are the unsung heroes of our planet and are often misunderstood. They are helping us fight the spread of Lyme disease and are considered the "clean up crew" of our environment. ... Next time you see one, don't forget to thank them for all that they do! Happy Monday!

This is Eddie . He is a handsome 6 month old Golden Retriever puppy who developed a type 2 base narrow malocclusion (see picture 1). What is that you may ask? Well, essentially Eddie's upper jaw is longer than his lower jaw creating an overbite so that his lower incisors are behind and not touching his upper incisors. This is abnormal as the lower incisors can end up hitting the roof of the mouth (see picture 1). ... Ouch. That would be like biting your cheek every time you closed your mouth! So far that doesn't seem to be happening but something we will monitor as Eddie grows. Of greater concern is the location of his lower canine teeth. The "fang" teeth. They are inside and behind where they should have been located (see picture 1). That means that when the lower canine tooth is fully erupted, it will create a painful hole in the roof of Eddie's mouth, one on either side......SAY WHAT?! OUCH! We referred Eddie to Dr. Hale the dental specialist in Guelph for a potential crown reduction and root canal (cut the fang tooth short so it doesn't poke a hole in the roof of Eddie's mouth once it is fully erupted). While they waited for this appointment we recommended ball therapy. Eddie's owners removed all of Eddie's toys but the ball and guess what?? IT WORKED! The ball helped push Eddies teeth in to place, saving him a surgery and his owners an expensive cost!! Check out picture 2 for the results and picture 3 to see how handsome this boy is! We are so happy for you, Eddie!!

So, you have found a rabbit nest full of adorable baby rabbits (kits), what now? Please, leave them alone! Did you know kits do not have a scent? ... Mother rabbit does and this is why she doesn't spend time hanging around the nest. She is trying to protect them from predators. If you are concerned the kits may be orphaned, you can place flour around the nest and check back 24 hours later to see if Mom has been back to feed them. Kits grow up quickly, at 3 weeks old they leave the nest and fend for themselves. With more people adventuring outside for walks during lockdowns, wildlife rehabilitation centres are already over populated with "orphaned" rabbits . Rehabilitating a baby rabbit takes a lot of work and resources, they are best left with Mom. You can check out Salthaven Wildlife and Hobbitsee Wildlife on Facebook for some great information and help. Please share!
