Kat attended the #strikeup2021 conference today on women’s entrepreneurship and paths to success. Women’s economic recovery is foundational for all of our economic recovery - what you focus on grows. StrikeUp gave many reasons to be optimistic about the future of rural Ontario women in business. #countrylawyer #trenthills

For this year's holiday greeting, we asked our talented friend Sara (@thesalvageoperation on Instagram) to make a beautiful ink drawing to share with our clients and colleagues. We decided, though, that instead of printing and sending holiday cards, we would do something a little different and post it here as a bright spot of art to be shared in a maddening and chaotic year. So many in our community are in need of bright spots and solace. We were so saddened to learn of t...he recent passing of Mike Letwin. Mike worked as a practicum student in our office while he was doing his paralegal diploma. He was a great guy, very funny, hard-working and devoted to his community as a volunteer. We know a deep void is left by his passing. This holiday season, we are sending support to a cause close to Mike's heart (Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hastings and Prince Edward Counties) in his memory and offer our sympathies to his family and friends for their profound loss. We are totally fortunate to work in an area of talented local producers, and did not expect to be able to contribute something special and tasty ourselves to a gifted maker's work, as that's not in our normal area of professional expertise! But our office window provides perfect growing conditions for calamondin oranges, which Cramahe Hill Marmalade made into a limited run of something magical and a fun and unexpected firm highlight right at the end of 2020!

It’s all smiles under our masks here these days! We are delighted that last month, Kim Watson took up her new role as our law clerk and Bronte Walker-Moores joined our team as our administrator. Congratulations to Kim on her new position and a warm welcome to Bronte!

Thanks to Trent Hills Now for featuring our Zoom room during Access to Justice week! It has been a wild year in our justice system but we are rooting for its legacy to be modernization, accessibility and meaningful virtual court processes. That last bit is already happening, right here on Bridge Street. http://trenthillsnow.com//access-to-justice-week-focuses-/

Happy Thanksgiving from Kinch Eddie Litigation! When you can’t give thanks together, fun food together by video conference is a perfectly reasonable alternative - here is our end of week ice cream celebration, each in our own separate spaces, on Zoom.

Exciting things from Westben tomorrow!

Kinch Eddie Litigation 15.10.2020

We are still proud sponsors of Westben. They have been working hard, in the absence of large performances, to keep connecting people through music and creativity. This chat is part of the lead-up to For the Birds, premiering September 19! https://m.youtube.com/watch

Justice squad? Masked avengers? Balanced and fair? Thanks to MkArtistry we are wearing some very fun office theme masks here at Kinch Eddie Litigation - these definitely work for our work. #countrylawyer #buylocal #teamspirit #justice

Welcome to our new Zoom room! Videoconferences will be a fixture of our justice system going forward and this new mode of access to justice poses a special challenge for rural clients with uncertain connectivity and varying technical abilities. We've converted a dated storage space in our office into a Zoom room so that our clients can attend their legal events here, close by to us. The Zoom room allows us to maximize the tools the court is making available, support our cl...ients during their hearings, and participate fully and seamlessly in hearings and offline negotiations. Thanks so much to our excellent contractors SJS Construction in Hastings who made an imperfect space into something very lovely (that is also easy to sanitize). Our decor has a strong #buylocal theme with a rustic plant stand from Bennett's Home Furnishings Campbellford, a monstera from Caroline's Organics, a repurposed baker's table from Weekender's Vintage and agricultural art from Winker's Nook. Most of all, it will be really great to see some of our valued clients in person here again! See more

What does economic recovery require in our area? This spring, Kat volunteered on the local private sector economic recovery task force, which released its six recommendations yesterday. All of these pieces are vital here in Trent Hills. #economicrecovery #ruralconnectivity #ppe #mentalhealth #sherecovery #volunteer #smallbusiness #trenthills #countrylawyer #hometown https://www.northumberland.ca//task-force-releases-six-fin#

Over the summer, limited in-person hearings will start again at select Ontario courthouses (in our region, we expect to have one courtroom in Lindsay and one in Belleville). Due to the reduced number of courtrooms, urgent matters will take up the first wave of in-person hearings - it will remain the norm to have remote hearings and more distant rescheduling for most matters for a while. There are many changes to our usual way of working in the courthouse included in today's Notice regarding the partial re-opening - participants are being asked to avoid bringing family or support people unless absolutely necessary, and lawyers are excused from wearing gowns until further notice since the robing rooms are not distancing-friendly in most locations. https://www.ontariocourts.ca//notices/notice-june-25-2020/

A nice piece of good news in the midst of a wild time: Justin Savoy has received his Osgoode Certificate in Provincial Offences Court Practice. Provincial offences include Highway Traffic Act matters, tickets for hunting and fishing violations, charges under environmental legislation, and other enforcement areas within provincial jurisdiction. Justin defends provincial offence matters in the Tri-County courts, Belleville and Oshawa, and is available for consultations by phone or Zoom.

Taking on the new normal - an update from Kinch Eddie Litigation We have operated behind closed doors here since mid-March. We are now adapting our in-office services for clients.... 1. Please call ahead before attending at our office: 705-653-4023 2. While we adapt our office environment, we continue to use alternate forms of dealing with our office (primarily phone meetings and video conferencing). 3. Litigation is evolving. Courthouse hearings are still suspended, but Superior Court phone/video hearings are underway for specific matters. We are up to date on the current state of court procedures locally and in other Ontario judicial districts. 4. Other ways of solving disputes are available. We are experienced in representing clients in negotiation, mediations and arbitrations, and can act for you in those processes. 5. All new client matters remain subject to satisfactory conflict checks and retainer arrangements, following an initial consultation. Our staff will work with you to assist in our intake procedures (including tech help). 6. As with other environments, please do not attend here if you are symptomatic in any way. We understand that people with medical issues may still have legal issues, and are willing to find creative ways to assist you that do not require in-person visits or increased risk. 7. Everyone should take COVID-19 as an opportunity for a fresh look at their wills and substitute decision-maker documents. We do not provide those services but will be happy to refer you to solicitors who do. 8. We are proud to be part of the Trent Hills community and thank everyone for the local spirit of empathy, ingenuity and warmth while the state of emergency has gone on. Take care, and see you soon. Sincerely, Kat Kinch & Aaron Eddie, and all of our team at Kinch Eddie Litigation

The Superior Court of Justice has continued the suspension of in-court matters through to July 6, 2020 at the earliest. In the meantime, we are still working behind closed doors at our office and remotely, assisting clients with emerging disputes, negotiating settlements, and assisting in ongoing litigation activity other than our usual in-court appearances. Intake inquiries can be directed to [email protected] or 705-653-4023 ext. 211. https://www.ontariocourts.ca/s/notice-continued-suspension/
