As you probably know sitting for long periods of time isn’t the best thing for your body. Let’s dive a bit deeper and share what you can do to keep your body healthy. First of all, sitting for extended periods of time can increase the pressure in your intervertebral discs (the structures between your vertebrae that make up your backbone). It can also increase creep in the tissues around the spine, which makes muscles and ligaments more relaxed and decrease the stiffness of ...the spine. So what can you do? Guidelines suggest having a seating limit of 50 minutes. Newer research may also suggest this to be lower around 30 minutes. Bottom line...take a break from sitting! 1 ) Use an Ergonomic chair. You’ve probably heard of this before. But why does an ergonomic chair help? A continuous load on tissues can create micro-trauma. If you move around this is less likely. Ergonomic chairs allow for this movement and have movement built into their design. So adjust your chair, recline, sit up and try new postures regularly. 2 ) The second tip is to actually get out of your chair. Try avoiding exercising in the chair. Get out of your chair and move the tissues and ligaments around your spine. This doesn’t have to be for a long while, 20 seconds or so will distribute your loads and reduce stresses on your intervertebral discs and vertebrae. You can also extend your lumbar spine. To do so: Raise your arms above your head, and then push towards the ceiling. 3 ) Try an exercise routine. The best time to do this would be in the middle of the day. This will help you move around and get some movement through your body, and it will be a change from sitting down. Furthermore, it is more advisable to exercise later on in the day since you have an increased range of motion compared to mornings. Heart disease is a condition that affects many people around the world. In Canada, it is considered as the second leading cause of death after cancer.
