Our newest rescue is a blind turkey! I got a Facebook message from Urban Safari Exotic Animal Rescue asking us to give a home to a blind turkey that was at their Surrey location. Apparently a local farm had a change of heart and didn't want to slaughter her. Urban Safari of course mostly cares for exotic animals, but they do have a few other random species in their back area along with a large Rabbitat. Urban Safari founder Gary Oliver went to pick her up, but realized they were not able to properly care for her. I knew that Kindred was the best place for her because of our experience with our other blind turkey Ray Charles. A blind bird has a lot of challenges and needs very specialized care. We don't have a quarantine area right now for her, so she is going out to foster care.

We didn’t even get to really know George. His time at Kindred was way too short only three months In this short time, I marvelled at how quickly he integrated into the feathered flock, but sad that so many people didn't get a chance to meet him. . It is an understatement to say it was sudden. We were blindsided that he was even il. George didn’t come out for breakfast on Tuesday morning. Instead he was huddled inside the coop and his comb was bright yellow. We brought h...im into the house and I called all our bird vets to get George in right away. George was cradled the whole time as we tried to determine what was wrong. . Please read more on our blog https://www.kindredfarm.ca/george-gone-too-soon/ . Every Tuesday.....More about AAI . Kindred Community Farm Sanctuary offers Animal-Assisted Intervention (AAI) programs. . "Children can take a reprieve from their own history and pain and focus love and support toward others who need them. This is empowering for young children and gives them a sense of purpose to heal and to continue to be able to help others. When a child cares about another human or animal, that child also tends to care about that other's environment. It ...is hoped that by providing opportunities to form bonds with animals, children may begin a lifetime of care toward animals as well as the environment." . "TYPE Serengeti into Google Maps. The screen immediately zooms in on a large light-green section of northern Tanzania, displaying a few man-made roads and a red border. The birds’-eye-view graphics identify the mile markers, topography, and glamping accommodations of the iconic Serengeti National Park with remarkable precision. But a crucial element is missing. In such a biologically rich place, where are all the habitats of other species? . Imagine typing Serengeti or Australia into Google Maps and seeing vibrantly illustrated webs of well-documented animal migration patterns and recognized wildlife habitats alongside human-built infrastructure. Such maps would paint much richer and more complete pictures of what potential visitors could expect to find: complex and biodiverse ecosystems where humans and nonhumans strive to coexist."

Thanks to our Cup of Coffee Patreons ($5 a month) our animals get the best care Gracie came to us with a bad injury on her back left leg and we've struggled to find medical options for her. Agwest in Abbotsford was recommended to me by SAINTS Rescue and I booked a consultation with them. I was excited to hear that they have a portable x-ray machine that they use on cows and was prepared to get this done. Dr. Chiasson of Agwest spent some time with Gracie and determined ...that x-rays weren't necessary. He diagnosed Gracie with obturator paresis which is muscle damage and inflammation in her groin and hamstring area (from falling into the well at her previous farm). Can you imagine that this is such good news! Because it is treatable! I was so worried that her injury would be untreatable and one day she wouldn't be able to get up. Are you the same as me and often think the worst :) Gracie is now on pain meds which help with her inflammation. We've already seen an improvement in her walking. And we can't wait to get her started on acupuncture (by Agwest), and muscle massage (we just need to purchase the machine). . Our hero!!! . Yesterday, we had a predator bird - probably a hawk - swoop down into the bird garden. The hawk wasn't able to lift off right away because Freida May attacked it. Feathers were flying and we saw the hawk fly up and rest on top of the garden fence. We ran out. All the birds were accounted for except for Emmy Lou. We couldn't find her anywhere. We called and called and looked and looked. We thought the worst - that in the time it took us to get out to the ga...rden the hawk had swooped back down and grabbed Emmy Lou. My heart sank. About an hour later, Kindred Volunteer Marilyn Kardash came to visit and I asked her to look for Emmy Lou. She found her in-between the Gobble Inn and the wooden duck house. The tiniest little space for the tiniest little bird. . We've had a lot of loss at the farm this year and were in need of a guardian angel. . Thank you Freida May for saving Emmy Lou See more

We had a very generous donation of pumpkins from @Betsy Robertson This is a food collection program that she organizes every fall, here is what she has to say: "I’m so warmed by how many people were excited to donate, collect, and deliver all these pumpkins to the animal sanctuaries and farms that put them to such great use. This was the absolute highlight of my month witnessing community working together to nourish local animals, support their hardworking caretakers, and prevent food waste showing a deep respect for the planet and its soil which nurtures the seeds we sow. Each year, this project continues to be a heart-warming reminder to me that our capacity for cooperation and resilience is often much greater than we think! Community is definitely where it’s at."

How cute are these little watermelon cucumbers. They are about the size of a grape and taste like cucumbers. They are also called mouse melon, Mexican sour gherkin, cucamelon, Mexican miniature watermelon, Mexican sour cucumber and pepquinos. This is our harvest from one very tiny plant. We're going to save the seeds, grow some more next year and hopefully have some for sale. This is the perfect plant for a children's garden!
