Continuing on our post earlier this week, we will discuss Shoulder Impingement and how to manage it at home. There are various home care remedies that can help to reduce the pain and tightness in your shoulders, these include: -Heat/Ice (10 minutes each, 10 minute Break) -Stretching -Exercises ... -Avoiding aggravating activities The pictures included on this post are 3 exercises that we usually prescribe patients with shoulder impingement. Here are some tips on how to do each: Picture 1: -Position yourself on the side of the injured shoulder -Position your arm as shown in the Start Position -With the non-injured arm, push down on the other wrist towards the floor -Push down until you feel a pulling sensation in the back of the affected shoulder -Once you feel this, hold for 15-30 seconds, then relax -Repeat 6-8 reps, 2-3 sets Picture 2: -Position yourself on the non-injured shoulder as the picture shows -Have your bottom arm under your head for support -Have affected shoulder/elbow tight to the body, and bend at a 90 degree angle as shown in the picture -Rotate the arm slowly while still hugging arm to the body, and rotate until the weight is vertical like shown in the picture -Start with small weights (1-2lbs), and progress to bigger weights as 8 repetitions become easier -Perform 6-8 reps, 2-3 sets Picture 3: -Position yourself on the injured shoulder as the picture shows -Place a pillow under your head for support -Hold the injured arm as close to the body as possible as shown on the picture, and bend elbow to a 90 degree angle -Rotate your shoulder towards the body slowly, and slowly rotate back towards the ground -Like above, start with small weights and gradually progress to more weight -Perform 6-8 reps, 2-3 sets For more information on this, visit our website today and book a consultation with one of our amazing therapists today!!!

Want a very simple, yet effective way to learn more about your body? Check out this important tip from our amazing Physiotherapist Meghan Longmore!! Pay attention to your habits! How do you stand? Do you tend to lean one way more than the other? If you lean more to your left, try leaning to your right!... Why is this important? If you stand on your left leg consistently, you are teaching your left leg how to balance, how to take weight through it and giving it constant feedback. BUT, what about your right leg? It is never learning how to work! A lot of injuries or aches/pains that we see at the clinic are very much coordinated to our standing habits. Pay attention and see what you find. Whatever you find, try the opposite!

Shoulder pain is a common injury that we see at the Kinetic Centre. One common shoulder injury that we see is Impingement. This usually leads to pain in the shoulder, especially on the front or side. What is it? This is an overuse injury to the tendons of your shoulder, most commonly the rotator cuff, that leads to pain. There is a area where these tendons run through, called the Sub-acromial Space. This area will begin to reduce in size due to the repetitive strain on t...hese tendons, leading to some pinching of the tendon and bursa in the area. There are two muscles that are commonly affected by this, the Supraspinatus and the Biceps. It is common in sports that require overhead and repetitive use of the shoulder. Common Symptoms of this: -Anterior/Lateral Shoulder Pain -Shoulder Weakness -Pain with overhead movements -Pinch pain when lifting arm out to the side How do we Treat this? -Acupuncture with stimulation -Shockwave Therapy -Massage Therapy -Physiotherapy -Laser -RockTape If this is something that you or someone you know is struggling with, then head to our website and book an appointment with one of our talented therapists today!!

We often use Kinesiology Tape, particularly RockTape, at the Kinetic Centre to assist with our patients injuries. There are many types of tapes out there, but they all serve the same purpose. This post will discuss the details on how Kinesiology Tape works, and how it could be beneficial for you! How does it work? When we apply tape onto the body, you will notice that we pull a significant amount of tension on it. This tension leads to some of the major functions, including: ... 1)Decompression: The tension applied to the tape will result in a lifting effect on the skin. This allows the different layers of tissues to seperate, which in turn helps to increase the blood flow to the area. This also is essential in reducing swelling and inflammation within the injured area. 2)Reduces muscle fatigue: Recent research has proven that Kinesiology tape can help to reduce muscle fatigue. This helps in the areas that are injured, as it will add minor support to the areas that need it. 3)Distribute Stress: Instead of restricting movement like white athletic tape, Kinesiology tape will help to improve movement within the area. This is done by distributing forces around the joints and reducing the strain on specific structures. The goal of Kinesiology Tape at the Kinetic Centre is to try and achieve all of the above. This may be different for different injuries, but all strive to achieve the same goal and get you out of pain! If this is something you think you may benefit from, then head to our website and book an appointment today!!!

The Kinetic Centre prides itself in offering our patients the most up to date techniques available. We are lucky to have some of the most unique treatments and assessment tools that are out there. To add more to our post from earlier this week regarding squats, we are going to dive into an assessment tool we offer called Kinetisense. This amazing product offers a wide variety of options, including the Kinetisense Advanced Movement Screen(KAMS). What is KAMS: KAMS is an assess...ment tool that uses 12 evidence based movements in just 3 minutes to provide specific information about your joints. This will provide you with results on which specific joints are restricted or hypermobile during exercise. Here is the descriptions from the Kinetisense Website: Our multidisciplinary technology efficiently and objectively assesses the fundamental movement of patients and athletes with a one-of-a-kind approach that combines proprietary software with a single front-facing 3D sensor. Our solution is affordable, portable, and useful for a variety of training and therapeutic applications. Engage the patient and client and help them reach a whole new level through the easy-to-understand outputs of the KAMS system. How is this valuable for you? Not all people struggle with pain while performing certain duties or exercising. But this does not mean that you are not performing everything properly. The KAMS assessment will evaluate your movements to ensure that you are not restricted/hypermobile in any of the joints in your body. Our therapists will look at the results of this assessment, and know exactly what to treat. If this is something that would benefit you, then book your assessment today on our website!!!

Lets talk some more about Golf and the characteristics of the swing. Pictured here we have a golfer at his impact position. The golfer on the LEFT has the correct position, the golfer on the RIGHT suffers from one of the most common swing mistakes. The picture on the right is demonstrating a term called Early Extension. Take a close look at where is buttocks is in relation to the umbrella. On the left you can see no space between it, and on the right there is definite spac...ing. This will lead to a few things that can be detrimental to a golf swing. This swing characteristic causes two types of misses: -Blocks to the right -Hook to the left Why does it cause these misses? -Arms/Clubs get stuck behind the body -Forces your torso to elevate during the swing When we see this swing characteristic, we know that the golfer is having limited mobility and stability in certain areas of the body. The golfer on the Right is most likely dealing with tightness and a muscular imbalance in the lower extremity, which changes his spinal angle at impact leading to a miss hit. One of the biggest ways we can determine if someone is dealing with this is through a simple squat. If you are reading this and are worried you might be struggling from this, then stand up and try to squat. Find a mirror, and look to see how it looks. If you are unable to squat to a full depth, leaning to one side, or have tightness/pain, then you could be dealing with some of these issues. The Kinetic Centre strives to enhance athletes bodies to reach their full potential. If this is something you are struggling with, visit our website and book and appointment with one of our talented therapists today!

Cupping is a common treatment at the Kinetic Centre, used by almost all of our therapists. If you are curious as to what this is and how it works, check out this post!!! What is Cupping: There are many types of cupping treatment, including Myofascial cupping, Fire Cupping, and Traditional Cupping. The Kinetic Centre frequently uses Myofascial Cupping and Traditional Cupping. Myofascial Cupping utilizes the movement of silicone cups around the areas of pain. Traditional cuppin...g uses either plastic or glass cups, but are stationary in the areas of treatment. How does it work? Cupping utilizes negative pressure within a cup, leading to the pulling up of the skin and underlying tissues. This leads to increased blood flow to the area, and also helps to relieve tension in a tissue called Fascia. This increased blood flow to the region is why people bruise. This is also an amazing tool for helping with lymphatic flow. What can we treat with Cupping: We perform this treatment on a wide variety of conditions and areas of the body. This includes: -Muscle strains -Ligament Injuries -Meniscal Injuries -Plantar Fasciitis -Chronic pain If you or someone you know is suffering from pain, then Cupping might be a good choice. If you would like to try this, please visit our website and book an appointment today!

We often discuss with our patients the importance of Foam Rolling on a daily basis. Over the past decade, this type of self treatment has started to replace regular static stretching. We benefit from foam rolling due to having certain receptors in our muscles, called GTO’s. These GTO‘s respond to pressure, and eventually will lead to relaxation of the muscle. If you are not foam rolling already, start adding this into your daily routine. Try doing it once a day, then gradual...ly work yourself up to twice a day. Here is a great article with detailed videos on how to properly foam roll. It is important that you first understand how to properly do this technique. Go check out the link below!!! https://www.runnersworld.com///how-to-use-a-foam-roller-0/

Brugger’s Relief Position is a great way to counteract back pain that may be occurring from improper posture. If you, or someone you know, struggles with neck and upper back pain due to poor posture, suggest trying this exercise. Poor posture can be the result of weakened musculature in the middle back. The goal of this exercise is to strengthen the weak muscles that cause us to slouch. This can be performed daily and as many times as possible to strengthen the back. If you are in pain, and in need of a treatment, please go to our website and book in with one of our therapists.

The Kinetic Centre is honored to support an event that is raising awareness for mental health and the current situation occurring in Medicine Hat. Brett Kissel will be performing at the Canalta Centre parking lot this evening to raise money for mental health. This will also be raising money for a local resident who was in horrific accident earlier this year. The Kinetic Centre has tickets for one vehicle for tonight’s performance, and would like to give this spot to the first person who comments on this post. This is a great opportunity to take the time and reflect on the current situation going on in Medicine Hat, in hopes of continuing to raise awareness for mental health! We hope everyone has a great long weekend!
