Rhythm, we like to think we all have it right!? Our Registered Physiotherapist Lauren shares insight into the rhythm of your shoulder. You got it when it comes to music, but what about your shoulder blades!? Believe it or not, our rhythm goes beyond the dance floor. Did you know that the intricate dance between your humerus (arm bone) and scapula (shoulder blade) can be an integral part of how your shoulders function and feel? Your scapulohumeral rhythm sets the ton...e for the health and wellness of the mobility that you can achieve in your shoulders. As you balance this new dance of work-at-home and everyday tasks, know that we are here to support you. Our team at Kinetic Physiotherapy has a passion for discovering precursors to injury and dysfunction, and place a high priority on helping you achieve wellness through both recovery and injury prevention. Lets get conscious about glutes ;) Put your mind where the muscle is Timing is critical, and learning to fire appropriate muscles at the right time can make all the difference. Squats, step-ups, lunges, you name it, when we are targeting a certain muscle group it is imperative that we put our minds where the muscle is. The glute muscles are our primary hip extender group, however, all too often the muscles of our low back and hamstrings take over the work and comp...ensate. Yep, these glutes can be a notorious group for delayed participation...we hate to say it, but they can be lazy bums! If certain muscles are used to hangin' back and letting others do the work, no matter how much we repeat well-intended exercises, we may miss effective strengthening of certain muscles if we lack conscious focus on those intended targets. Compensations and delayed muscular firing of the glutes can lead to lower back and lower extremity dysfunction. Want to wake up your glutes? Waking up the glutes: no weights or equipment necessary, just a conscious effort on those glutes, yep... let's think of those buns! Position: lie on your stomach, upper body relaxed Pre-Action: squeeze those buns together, focusing on the activation of your glutes** Movement: actively engage your core, keep your legs extended straight, focusing on your glutes doing the movement and moving only from your hip, lift one leg towards the ceiling (approx. 6 inches), be sure to stop lifting as soon as you start to feel your pelvis lift up and/or lower back arch Resistance: let the weight of gravity be your resistance, hold the contraction at the top for 5 seconds, making sure to use your breath- exhaling on exertion See more

GLUTES. Our Registered Physiotherapist Katie share some insight about our Glutes: We use our glutes a lot throughout the day, so it’s important to take the time to treat them right! Tight glutes can often contribute to dysfunctions such as decreased hip mobility, low back pain or knee pain.... Glute release is a soft tissue technique to help reduce glute & low back pain. Book a treatment with one of our therapists if you think your glutes could use some attention!

SLEEP. Great tips and Information on the importance of sleep from our RMT @mb_rehab_performance #Repost @mb_rehab_performance with @get_repost... Many of us fall short in terms of getting enough sleep, me included. The body needs sleep to not just aid in the recovery of muscles but to also aid in recovery of the mind. Sleep has been shown to decrease stress which in turn has showed increased GPAs in school. Sleep should be looked at as part of your training routine, it’s training too! In a study with NCAA Stanford University swim team they increased their sleep to 10hours a night for a week, this aided in the swimmers becoming faster in the swim, they reacted quicker from the start blocks and their turns also showed great speed improvement. You should set your 7-9hours sleep to the same time every night so your bodies hormones secretions have a set time point. Melatonin, Human Growth hormone, Testosterone and Cortisol are all hormones that become more effective and efficient when you get into a routine with your sleep. Tips for getting better sleep: 1. Set a routine time to go to sleep and wake up 2. Turn off electronics 60-90mins before bed 3. No caffeinated drinks 6hours before bed time 4. Drink plenty of water 5. Keep your bedroom dark, quiet and cool 6. No sugar after dinner 7. Don’t use your bed to watch TV or as a desk, use it only for sleep . . . #training #recovery #sleep #sleeping #train #workout #recover #rest #run #running #weightlifting #bodybuilding #anatomy #injuryprevention #preventative #prevention #injury #injured #massagetherapy #massagetherapist #registeredmassagetherapist #massage #physio @ Burlington, Ontario

DON’T WAIT. That annoying low back pain that you are experiencing may not always go away on its own. Our advice is to always have your injury assessed as soon as you feel it, better yet, set up regular appointments to be proactive about the health and longevity of your body and it’s joints. The sooner you come in the less likelihood you are to develop compensatory movement patterns.

A great post by our RMT Matt! #Repost @mb_rehab_performance with @get_repost Overtraining vs under recovery ... Most overtraining type injuries are often actually due to under recovery. To over train is actually very hard to achieve, overtraining injuries are usually due to a big increase in training that leaves the body too little time to recover as it’s not used to the increased load. Most people that see health professionals for overtraining injuries or tightness are not recovering properly between workouts. We ask are you stretching? and almost all the time the answer is either no or yes but not enough/always. The same answers come when we ask are you sleeping enough?, Are you taking care with nutrition? And do you get regular maintenance treatment. These are 4 crucial aspects of recovery; stretching, sleep, nutrition and manual therapy treatment (although isn’t limited to these) and we constantly see people neglecting these after physical activity. I will touch on recovery methods throughout the next week to help you really focus on what your body needs most. @kineticphysio @tmchealthcentres . . . #recovery #recover #trainingrecovery #MassageTherapy #MassageTherapist #RegisteredMassageTherapist #ManualTherapy #Physiotherapy #PhysicalTherapy #Osteopath #Osteopathy #workout #workoutrecovery #training #cycling #running #bodybuilding #trackandfield #squat #deadlift #weightlifting

Dynamic Balance. Dynamic Balance is maintaining control of your body over a moving base of support. Just like injury, we appreciate our hurt body part so much after it's been hurt. So much in this moment has been taken away from us as a community. Take this time to reconnect with your loved ones via phone, zoom or in your immediate family. Heal your body and relax and when we're all ready to come back, we will come back as our best and healthiest selves.
