GYM UPDATE: We have received a lot of calls and messages with regards to the gym opening. We realize the government indicated that gyms could open effective June 5 based on guidelines but unfortunately those guidelines have not been provided yet. Our gym association has sent in a proposal and we are awaiting to hear back.... Due to lack of information, we are unable to open on June 5 and will remain closed until we have further information. We apologize and thank you for your continued patience at this time. We hope that the plan is reviewed quickly so that we can open as soon as possible. Stay safe and healthy and we look forward to seeing you all very soon.

Dear Valued Members, Since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, we have been carefully monitoring the progression of the virus and closely following the advice of Canada's public health authorities. As the virus continues to spread throughout Canada and we now have 3 confirmed cases in NS, we have made the difficult but important decision to close effective 9pm tonight until March 31 and will reassess at that time.... What happens now... *All memberships will be paused *Trial memberships and our March special will be paused and will resume when we re-open We will continue to provide updates via our Facebook and website. If you have questions or concerns, please contact us on either site. Stay safe everyone and we look forward to seeing you all again very soon. In good health, Marvin MacLean Owner, Kin-Excel Fitness Centre

Bunions We have all heard of them and some of us may have them, but what are they really? And, what causes them? A bunion is a bony prominence at the base of the big toe or clinically, the first metatarsal head. This is a common condition we see in clinic and originally it was thought that bunions were caused by high heeled shoes or narrow shoes as it was mainly women who suffer with bunions. This was not exactly the case though. Family history of the condition is actuall...y more of a predeterminant than footwear although poorly fitting footwear can exacerbate the issue. Sometimes these bunions can be painful and sometimes not. So, what can we do about them? First off, custom orthotics can help to correct the underlying foot biomechanics. Properly fitting footwear can also help tremendously and some modifications to the shoe can be done to help accommodate the bunion so that there is no pressure in this area. Bunion splints can also help to reduce pain and can be worn day and night depending on the severity of the condition. And finally, surgery may also be an option if pain becomes intolerable. If you are having pain associated with the bunion, make an appointment with your pedorthist and they can help determine what would be most appropriate base on the severity of the condition.

How is your New Year's resolution going? If you are like the majority of people, you have resolved to be more active this year! With this new increase in activity can come some complications though. One of the most common complaints I see this time of year is plantar fasciitis. Many times people have started their new routines but may not have purchased new shoes or maybe the incorrect shoes for their foot type. As a result, they may get a flare up of plantar fasciitis.... So, what exactly is plantar fasciitis? Plantar fasciitis is typically inflammation of the connective tissue that connects the calcaneus (heel) to the metatarsphalangeal joints (toes). It usually manifests as heel pain which may be worse in the morning and may also be aggravated with increased standing. The good news is thought is that orthotics can help with they syndrome as they will help reduce the amount of pronation the individual is experiencing. Other aids, pictured below, may also be beneficial in helping with the acute symptoms associated with plantar fasciitis. Exercises, specifically stretching, are extremely beneficial when dealing with the symptoms of plantar fasciitis. If you are thinking you may have some of these symptoms, give our office a call and we can help determine if orthotics may be appropriate.

Let's talk PATELLAFEMORAL SYNDROME! Yes, this is a very common diagnosis people may get when their knee hurts. Usually activities such as running, squatting and ascending stairs may aggravate the condition. What exactly is it though? Patellafemoral syndrome is when the nerves around the kneecap sense pain. Typical pain felt is a dull, aching pain in the front of the knee. Many times the patella or knee cap is malaligned and this may be due to weak medial quadriceps or weak l...ateral hip muscles and possibly lack of flexibility in the hips. A knee brace can help with this, in conjunction with treatment, as they have a patella stabilizer which can help the patella track properly. Orthotics may also be of benefit as they control the amount of pronation the patient may be experiencing. At Kin-Excel Fitness Center we carry a wide range of knee braces to help with this condition. Please contact our office to determine what would be most appropriate.

Great news - we are re-opening! Effective June 8, 2020 we will begin to see patients again in our Pedorthic Clinic. A big thank you to our Pedorthic Association for working so hard over the past few months to help us make this transition as seamless and safe for all. A few things:... Appointments will be staggered to allow for proper cleaning to take place between patients Please arrive on time for your appointment and not early as we still would like to minimize the amount of people in the office. There is a hand sanitizing station as you come in and we ask that you use that upon entering. If you would like to use a mask, please bring your own as there is a shortage and we are unable to supply masks for everyone. We will continue screening for any symptoms of COVID and ask that you refrain from visiting us if you have any of the following symptoms: fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose or congestion. We are excited to see all of you again and if you have any questions or would like to set up an appointment time, please call.
