Although it seems like winter again after the dusting of snow we got last night, rest assured spring like conditions will be arriving soon. The Old growth woodlands and meadows are starting to "green up" and there are many wild edibles within these watersheds that we can collect, expertly prepare and enjoy . I will be hosting a " Wild Edibles & Woodland Foraging" tour as well as a guided "Riverside Habitat" walk this Spring. Visit my webpage at http://kingbirdnaturetours.c...om for more info soon to be posted. These recent photos were captured by my good friend and excellent photographer Laurel Thompson while on a walk along the Dunk River . Ladies Slipper Orchids, Fiddleheads and the lovely Star Flower are just a few of the many woodland plants and wild ground cover we will see within these old woodlands. The many habitats of the watershed will change at a rapid rate over the next few weeks, and continues its transition from season to season . An abundance of new life in all its varied beauty happens at this time of early spring. Most of the woodland plants dormant for so long are ready to use the stored energy from last falls preparations, and are bursting their buds and blooms. Join me for one of these amazing tours and experience for yourself the sights and scents of springtime in the old growth woodlands . See more

According to all the weather networks, the entire eastern seaboard is preparing for a real good " Nor'easter " . Well isn't that lovely, another 40+ cm of snow and hurricane force winds. The only thing on the bright side is that we will have warm temps on the weekend. And yes the +10 or+ 12 degree thaw will certainly put the kibosh to some of this abundance of snow, it will also create many other issues. Eventually mother nature will tire of this erratic weather and decide to... allow the earth to warm up and reawaken like it should be doing now. There are many southern migrating songbird species already here , I guess they expected spring to be in full swing when they got here, only to find three or in some cases five or six feet of snow everywhere. But April is not far off and we will hope for spring to follow shortly after. After all this crazy weather is over and things have calmed a bit , join me for an amazing guided tour along the beautiful Dunk River valley. In a week or two things should look a lot more spring like and the earth will start to show some brighter hues and new life starting to pop out here and there. Bring your camera and follow me on a stunning walk through the old growth Acadian woodlands and see the amazing things that abound within these verdant watersheds. I will also be posting two new tours for the spring and summer, details coming soon. Join me on a tour and enjoy some of the beautiful wild things most poeple have forgotten about. Just back from a walk down the trail below Scales Pond, had to break trail this morning, made the first human tracks through the fresh snow. Seen tracks from earlier this morning of the Mink, Ruffed Grouse, fox and squirrel . Join me for a guided nature walk and experience everything the woodlands has to offer this time of year. Here area few more photos I have taken while out on a walk of the Dunk River . Awesome news , there is a new nature trail opening up that borders the recently re-flooded Scales Pond . It allows you to get right to the waters edge and experience the wildlife and insect activity that thrives there. In every season, this newly opened area of the Dunk River watershed will allow hikers beautiful areas to access and explore. Some areas of this new trail will be widened and graded ...with fine gravel to allow wheelchair access and easy walking for seniors, a great idea if you asked me. Spring seems to be in the air, even though a quick look out the window shows otherwise. But I have seen many localized varieties of birds gathering nest building supplies and there are some southern migrants back and wanting to get started at nest building as well. Join me for a lovely guided tour of any of the four amazing nature trails within the Dunk River riparian zones. They vary greatly from smaller upstream river valleys to the lower wider stretches and everything in between. Experience these jewels of nature and see why I have a passion for trying to preserve the remnants of how they once were, in these times of environmental demise for economic boom . Well that's more like it, Spring has arrived and in good time I might add. The trees and flowers have finally decided to show us their green leaves and colored petals. The sun that creates life on this planet is shining down with a show of intensity . Join me for a guided tour, Visit my website at http://kingbirdnaturetours.com to set up a time for this exceptional tour. You will stroll under a canopy of old growth hardwoods and giant Eastern Hemlocks. There are a few big nat...ive White Pines, our only native species throughout the forest as well. All things that require sunshine for life are now growing, and we all can breath a sigh of relief . The woodlands are absolutely brimming with new growth and life. The fresh buds are pushing off their old winter coats and tender green life is exposed to the sun.The abundance of birdsong in the old growth is like a symphony, coming from all directions, and at different times of the day. Some birds are early risers and sing at the break of dawn. Some sing mid morning like the Bobolink, one of the sweetest songs of all birds. Others prefer the cool of the evening to try to charm the ladies of the species with his singing prowess. I suppose those rules apply to most life on earth, maybe not the singing. Join me on an exceptional walk along the stunning Dunk River Valley and experience the wonder and beauty of life in the old growth woodlands. In the first picture we have new Yellow Birch leaves only a couple days old, The next photo is of the Marshmallow tree, Kidding of course, it is an dead Spruce that has been colonized with a type of Fungus, these old dead trees are vital to the woodlands, they are like larders for a large variety of birds and other creatures of the forest. Plan your tour soon and see the new life as it first appears and when the birds are still singing at their finest. As the spring gets on the birds go still, as they are on the nest and need to stay quiet to protect the young. The third photo is the actual trail through the woodlands with the majestic Dunk river on your left. See more

Is it ever going to warm up some? Those few days last week gave us the inkling that it can still happen. But again mother nature is keeping the sun well hidden . Seems a little shy about spring , but had no issues with giving us a six month winter. Regardless of what we think of this weather, the woodlands and the riverbanks are showing off their beautiful colors and fresh new greens and reds they have been saving up all winter to show us. Before you know it the Lupines will ...be out to brighten up the ditches as well. Join me for a springtime walk along the stunning Dunk River. Everything on the forest floor, and practically everywhere you look are "springing" to life. Including many varieties of insects, Butterflies,Mayflies, Caddis flies, Bees, Ants and of course the biting ones as well. Everything in its place right!! Visit my website @ http://kingbirdnaturetours.com to join me and experience the flora and fauna that abound in these old growth woodlands. There is a good chance to see many types of wildlife so bring your camera to grab some great shots. Or just relax and remember what you see as a nice memory. I will bring along some nice hot tea and homemade treats and we will stop under a huge old Hemlock tree and sample them. Please enjoy these spring photos taken by my good friend and great photographer Laurel Palmer Thompson. See more
