Kings Way Assembly 24.05.2021

I recently began reading through the book of Acts and came upon this passage which details the disciples’ process of deciding who would replace Judas: So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. Then they all prayed, ‘O Lord, you know every heart. Show us which of these men you have chosen as an apostle to replace Judas in this ministry, for he has deserted us and gone where he belongs.’ Then they cast lots, and Matthias was select...ed to become an apostle with the other eleven. Something struck me in this passage: These were the disciples of Christ Jesus himself. These people knew the heart and will of God perhaps better than anyone else in the world at the timeafter all, they followed Jesus everywhere he went and witnessed his ministry firsthand. Despite this, when a difficult and important dilemma arises, they are unable to discern the will of God, even when joining together in prayer. The lack of clarity is such, in fact, that they turn to casting lotsa process probably not unlike flipping a coin or drawing strawsto decide who will become an apostle. See at this point, the disciples had yet to receive the Holy Spiritthis doesn’t take place until the next chapter on the day of Pentecost. The disciples are among the godliest people on earth, and yet devoid of the Holy Spirit, they are unable to receive any leading without turning to a roll of the dice. Reading this passage sparked a great appreciation in me for the Holy Spirit’s guidance, for his active role in our lives. I am reminded of how unworthy I am to have the Spirit of God convicting and informing me in my day-to-day life and how great a gift that is. I am also reminded, however, of my own tendency to want clear signs. I am reminded of my tendency to chase after tangible evidence of God’s will for my life that requires no faith. I am made aware of the temptation to assume that the path of least resistance is God’s will for my life, whether that means the path with more money, greater prestige, what have you. In our fast-paced culture, we run from the Holy Spirit who wants to softly convict us in moments of solitude and try to trade him for a God of convenient yes-or-no answers on our drive to work. We have been blessed with a Holy Spirit who wants to mould us into people who instinctively follow the will of God, but, whether we mean to or not, we can so easily become Christians who just want to cast lots. Ironically, I believe that if the disciples were given the choice, they would have chosen the option of quiet communion with the Holy Spirit over casting lots without a moment’s hesitation. In a culture which so often draws us away from the Spirit and causes us to take him for granted, let us take this season, particularly during our Speed Bumps series, to pause and be grateful for his enduring presence and counsel and to seek after it in deliberate times of quietness and slowing. Blessings, Pastor Alex

I’m really excited to begin a new series of messages this Sunday called, Speed Bumps. I’m not sure about you but I have a real rocky relationship with speed bumps. Most of the time they really annoy me. As I approach one I’m usually muttering something under my breath. Why this disdain for speed bumps? They slow me down. Which leads to this confessionI think I live in a hurry too often. How about you? One would think that in a time of lock down and restrictions we would ha...ve slowed down but I’m hearing and seeing evidence to the contrary. I think it’s human naturewe rush, we overcommit, we multi-task, we juggle and it leads to a life much different than God designed. Speed bumps are intentionally created and encouraged by God with the intent of slowing us down and reducing our pace so that we can live life to the fullest. Join me this Sunday at 10:30AM for message one in the Speed Bumps series as we ask God to work deeply in our hearts so that we can live the life He intends for us to live. Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through Him! For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life! Romans 5:6-10 Join us today in a celebration of Jesus' life and rememberance of His sacrifice. Service starts at 10:30!
