For Black History Month, Kings Electrical Services is highlighting a pioneer in the Electrical industry Lewis Howard Latimer. Lewis Howard Latimer began his Navy career at the age of fifteen in 1863. After receiving an honorable discharge in 1865, he went on to work as an office boy at a patent law firm. It was at this law firm that Latimer learned how to use drafting tools which eventually got him recognized by his boss for his talent for sketching patent drawings; this l...ead to Latimer being promoted to Head Draftsman in 1872. In 1876 he began working for Alexander Graham Bell at Bell’s patent law firm. Latimer was hired to draft the necessary drawings required to receive a patent for Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone. In 1879, Latimer was hired as Assistant Manager and Draftsman for the U.S. Electric Lighting Company. While working there, Latimer invented a modification to the process for making carbon filaments for lightbulbs. Latimer received several patents for inventions surrounding the lightbulb and electric lamps. His most famous patent was in 1882 for the Process of Manufacturing Carbons, which was an improved method for the production of carbon filaments for lightbulbs. This new process for creating a carbon filament was an improvement on Thomas Edison’s original paper filament that would burn out quickly. Edison’s longest-lasting lightbulb could only last approximately fifteen hours before burning out. Latimer’s invention helped make electric lighting more practical and affordable for the average household. In 1884, the Edison Electric Light Company in New York City hired Latimer as a Draftsman and expert witness in patent litigation on electric lights. During his time at Edison, Latimer wrote the first book on electric lighting called Incandescent Electric Lighting, and supervised the installation of public electric lights in New York, Philadelphia, Montreal, and London. Among his many accomplishments, Latimer was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for his work on electric filament manufacturing techniques and has an invention program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) named after him.

He goes above and beyond for his staff every single day and always makes sure we are taken care of and feel appreciated, which is so important in the workplace.
