Congratulations, Jon Tattrie, MFA Class of 2020, for what the Miramichi Reader, in its latest review, calls his "skilful narrative... Amidst the chaos and inju...stice of these anguished times, "Peace by Chocolate" is exactly what we need: a story that reminds us that even against enormous odds positive outcomes are possible and that remarkable things can be accomplished through hard work and perseverance... Tattrie’s book recounts in unsentimental terms the extraordinary achievement of many people. See more

Congratulations to Kirk Angus Johnson (MFA Class of 2019) whose first nonfiction book, "Some Kind of Hero: Love, Death and Trauma in a Nova Scotia Town," will b...e published by Random House Canada in October 2021. The book focuses on the story of Lionel Desmond, a former Canadian soldier suffering from PTSD, who murdered his wife, their daughter and his mother, and then died by suicide in the tiny community of Upper Big Tracadie, NS in January 2017. Like Desmond, Johnson had been a soldier, deployed to Afghanistan and had served in the same infantry regiment. Johnson too was diagnosed with PTSD as a result of his experiences. And his connections to Desmond ran even deeper. Both men were of African lineage and from small, rural Black communities. Kirk Johnson brings that unique perspective to this important story. https://kingsjournalism.com/some-kind-of-hero-mfa-grads-bo/ See more

"Marilyn Carr knew she wanted to write a book. She even knew what it would be about her hometown of Deep River, Ontario, population barely 4,000. Everyone th...inks the way they grew up was normal, she says, until it becomes clear, usually through time and experience, that perhaps it wasn’t. ... Congratulations to King's MFA grad Dr. Christian Smith. His captivating, one-of-a-kind memoir introduces readers to the larger-than-life tale of his mother a...n internationally famous psychic with a reputation for startling and consistently accurate predictions and my quest to make scientific sense of it all. But the story is about more than just his scientist’s quest. It also weaves together the strands of a complicated mother-son relationship. Over time, Smith notes, the high profile and emotionally depleting work affected my mother’s health and relationships, addiction took over her life, and I pulled away. Christian Smith's book is available for pre-order now. https://kingsjournalism.com/the-psychic-and-her-son-the-sc/

Rediscovering Canada: The Petawawa Paradox," by Bernard Wood (King’s MFA Class of 2020) is one of the finalists for this year’s Penguin Random House Book Propo...sal prize. Wood rediscovers Canada, and its hidden stories, through the window of one spectacular place. As we confront injustices in our history, this book asks whether and how we can still be proud of our country. The distinctive name of Petawawa resonates with millions as the home of Canada’s first great army camp through a turbulent century of wars and peacekeeping abroad. But Wood has also found the deeper stories of this beautiful, unforgiving place at the heart of the upheavals and struggles in this land, from pre-history to today’s headlines.
