A HUGE congratulations to @katiebruggs, who has been awarded Covid Champion by @Rowing Canada. Katie volunteered her time to head the KRC’s COVID Safety Committee to create and enforce proper safety precautions. She worked with the rest of the committee to decide how to best create covid-safe programming, all while continuing to work as a full time coach. This award is well deserved and we are so proud of Katie!!

John Armitage is one of the founders of the Kingston Rowing Club in 1977. To this day, John continues to be a crucial member of the KRC community and is still serving as Head Coach of the club. We are so thankful for John and are ecstatic that he is being recognized by RowOntario. Read below to learn more about John and his contribution to rowing in Ontario. Re-posted from @rowontario John was first introduced to rowing ...in his native Brockville, Ont., at the age of 13. He had a successful rowing career, which included an appearance at the 1975 World Rowing Championships in the men’s coxless lightweight four. Following his athletic career, John turned to coaching and was in luck as his alma mater, Queen’s University, was looking for a head coach for their rowing program. In 1976, John became head coach at Queen’s, a post he would hold for over 40 years Shortly after he was named head coach at Queen’s, John helped form the Kingston Rowing Club in 1977. He was named the new club’s first Secretary and oversaw the building of the first clubhouse in 1979 and is still contributing to the club as its head coach. During his coaching career at Queen’s John led the Gaels to 20 OUA Championships (13 women’s, 7 men’s) and a women’s national championship in 2007. In addition to coaching at Queen’s, he’s also coached at the national and international level, coaching for Team Canada at the 1987 World University Games and for Team Ontario at the 1989 Canada Summer Games Over the years, John has earned many accolades for his work in coaching and as a builder, including 3 OUA Coach of the Year Awards, 1 CURC Coach of the Year Award, and Rowing Canada Coach of the Year in 1999. In 1993, John was presented with an award from the Ontario Ministry of Culture and Recreation for his work in fostering the growth of rowing in the Kingston area and was inducted as a builder into the Kingston & District Sports Hall of Fame in 2001 . Thank you John Armitage for your dedication and commitment to the sport of rowing. Your career is truly an inspiration to everyone in the Ontario rowing community and beyond! #RowOn

We are so incredibly saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Ilse Loomer-Scott on July 15th at the young age of 21 years old. Ilse was a dedicated rower and coach with the Kingston Rowing Club as well as with Queen’s Rowing, and she was a familiar and comforting face amongst our community. Her glowing smile, consistently positive attitude and passion for the sport will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her and having her in their lives. Ilse passed a...way while surfing in Tofino, which was one of her favourite activities. She was able to give seven others the chance at a better life through her organ donation. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Loomer-Scott family during this difficult time, and we ask that you also keep them in your immediate thoughts and wishes. Please visit https://www.forevermissed.com/ilse-may-loomer-scott/about to view Ilse’s obituary and pay your respects. You may also share any thoughts, condolences, memories, or photos at this link. The Loomer-Scott family has set up a special honour in Ilse’s name at her high-school, and funds raised will reflect values that Ilse embodied and embraced. This can be found at the link above.

#seniorspotlight Despite the cancellation of their final high school races, our senior rowers are looking forward to the summer season and university. It’s been a fantastic time rowing with everyone for the past few years and we’re sad to say goodbye. However, we look forward to reuniting each year for summer rowing at the KRC!! Jess Stephenson... Throughout her time at KRC and KCVI, Jess Stephenson has been a model of dedication and competitive spirit for everyone on the rowing team. Whether it is being speedy on the water or grinding through tough erg pieces Jess works as hard as she can and then a little harder. Her work has paid off shown in her impressive placements and medals. At 2018 ERA regatta Jess placed 2nd in the 1x, and 1st in the 2x, the next year she placed 3rd in the LW 2x at CSSRA’s. Recently this fall she placed 4th in both the 2x and 4x events at Head of the Schuylkill in Philadelphia. Jess will be pursuing a degree in Engineering at Queen’s university where she will continue rowing as a Gael!
