Brantford Company Fined $50,000 for Injuries to Two Workers January 29, 2021 Brantford, Ontario, a small business and manufacturer of custom automated machinery.... Description of Offence: Two workers were injured when a heavy electrical panel fell over while it was being moved. The employer failed to ensure that there was a procedure in place to prevent material from injuring workers by tipping or falling. Date of Offence: June 19, 2018. Date of Conviction: January 26, 2021. Penalty Imposed: Following a guilty plea, the company. was fined $50,000 in provincial offences court in Brantford by Justice of the Peace . The court also imposed a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge as required by the Provincial Offences Act. The surcharge is credited to a special provincial government fund to assist victims of crime. Background: On June 19, 2018, a worker was moving a large electrical panel, which measured eight feet tall, 16 feet long and 18 inches wide, weighing about 4,000 lbs, intending to load it onto a truck. The panel was put on two wheeled dollies, one at the front and one at the rear of the panel. However, the feet in the centre of the panel impeded movement, as the dollies were not tall enough to allow the feet to clear the floor. The worker jacked up the bottom of the panel in an attempt to install wood studs on the dollies to raise the panel higher. While doing so, the panel tipped over and fell on the worker. As the panel tipped over, it also struck another nearby worker. Both suffered injuries. The investigation by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development determined that there was no procedure for the movement of the panel onto the truck. In addition, the panel was not secured against tipping and falling. Section 46 of the Regulation for Industrial Establishments prescribes that machinery, equipment or material that may tip or fall and endanger any worker shall be secured against tipping or falling. Section 25(1)(c) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act states that an employer shall ensure that the measures and procedures prescribed by the act and regulations are complied with. The defendant failed as an employer to ensure the measures and procedures prescribed by section 46 of the regulation were complied with, contrary to section 25(1)(c) of the act. This is an offence contrary to section 66(1) of the act

Toronto police say a stationary crane fell into a downtown area intersection, narrowly missing two pedestrians. Emergency crews were called to River Street and Dundas Street East in the city’s Regent Park neighbourhood shortly after 10:30 a.m on August 6th 2020. Toronto Fire Platoon Chief said they found two people, a man and a woman, with minor injuries.... One female narrowly missed being hit by the crane when it collapsed. It crushed her bike, said the Fire Platoon Chief It was very close. The woman was checked by paramedics and was released on scene. A man was also walking in the area when the crane fell and was assessed by paramedics for shock. No one else was injured. It’s a good day for us when we don’t have fatalities due to this and it could have been much worse, There’s an initial report construction crews were checking the maintenance on the crane and noticed a couple of shear bolts were missing or damaged. The crews evacuated the area inside the construction zone immediately but were not able to secure the outside area in time. The exact timeline on events is still being investigated, During the investigation we are going to be looking at how can this be avoided in the future, The construction company, responded to the incident citing a mechanical failure and said that the crane was not in operation at the time and did not have an operator on board. The construction company said work on the site has been temporarily suspended and an internal investigation of their own is underway. The ongoing health and safety of everyone on all of our construction sites and in the communities in which we build remains our highest priority, There were several people in the area who witnessed the crane collapse, including one woman who was out for a jog. A man who was in the area working with about a dozen other people said he heard the crane fall and came out to see what happened. The power went off, and it was just like a bomb went off,We came outside and noticed the crane was down. Police said road closures are in effect and drivers and pedestrians should avoid the area. The Ministry of Labour has been notified This is the second crane collapse in the city in less than a month.

Talking of face masks.....What is the meaning of keep smiling? To maintain an upbeat and positive attitude or demeanor, especially despite or in the face of difficulties or adversities.

Kingston Safety Consultants 08.09.2020

Last modified on Tue 31 Mar 2020 Do face masks work against Covid -19 ? I would also have to ask the question, are they effective if they are not fitted correctly !!!!... We have a mask fitting course that we utilize for the workplace, this insures the user fits and wears the mask in the correct fashion...... Claim: ‘Face masks don’t work’ Wearing a face mask is certainly not an iron-clad guarantee that you won’t get sick viruses can also transmit through the eyes and tiny viral particles, known as aerosols, can penetrate masks. However, masks are effective at capturing droplets, which is a main transmission route of coronavirus, and some studies have estimated a roughly fivefold protection versus no barrier alone (although others have found lower levels of effectiveness). If you are likely to be in close contact with someone infected, a mask cuts the chance of the disease being passed on. If you’re showing symptoms of coronavirus, or have been diagnosed, wearing a mask can also protect others. So masks are crucial for health and social care workers looking after patients and are also recommended for family members who need to care for someone who is ill ideally both the patient and carer should have a mask. However, masks will probably make little difference if you’re just walking around town or taking a bus so there is no need to bulk-buy a huge supply.
