FAQ: What does a doula cost/ Why does a doula cost ____?/ What should I pay my doula? This is a really common question, and one of the many different factors that come into play when selecting a doula. Here is some information to help you understand what goes into pricing, and why some doulas may have higher or lower rates all in the same area. -The average certified doula has spent between $1000-$2000 on her training requirements. This doesn't include on going costs that c...ome with running a business, such as her website, marketing, continuing education, childcare, or missed days at work if she is working a second job - During her time 'on call' your doula is available to respond to you 24/7. Most doulas officially go on call around week 38 of your pregnancy, and many remain on call for up to two weeks after your baby is born so they are available to provide you with postpartum support. This means they won't be drinking or travelling more than an hour or so away from where you are going to have a baby, and will keep their phones charged and ready in case of a late night call or text. They will be ready to drop everything and go to you when you need them. - Additional experience or training will also reflect in the price of a doula. Does your doula do placenta encapsulation? Does she offer photography as part of her package? Has she been a doula for many years? Does she have another job as a nurse, yoga instructor, RMT, or lactation consultant that adds to her knowledge base? Is she a new doula looking to get more experience and therefore more flexible with her prices? - A doula's price range will also be affected by where she lives. For instance, an experienced doula in Toronto may charge $1000 to reflect the cost of living, where a doula in a smaller town of similar experience may only charge $750. -The time frame of labour support can vary, and is usually long. The average first time labour is 10-20 hours. An induction or complicated labour may stretch to 24-40 hours. That doesn't include pre and postnatal appointments or extended postpartum support. For instance, if you paid your doula $200 and she was with you for 18 hours, she would only be getting paid $11.11/hour, not including any other support. Remember, it takes a lot of time and hard work to become a good doula! We all do this because we sincerely love helping women on their journey to motherhood. There is support available for all price ranges here in Kingston.

FAQ; Why should I hire a doula/ what are the benefits of having a doula at my birth? Nurses, OB/GYNs, Midwives, and doulas all have different roles as part of your support team during your birth. Here are some reasons hiring a doula can have unique advantages. - A doula will offer continuous support for you during your labour, whether it's ten hours or twenty. Unlike nurses, doctors, and midwives, she is not bound to any shift changes. ... - You will have developed a close relationship with your doula through prenatals and pregnancy support. She will be a familiar face and source of comfort, whereas your OB may only be with you for a short period of time, and you will have not met your nurse before. - A doula takes the pressure off of your partner. She can help guide your partner in supporting you better, making them less stressed during the experience. They are able to take a break if they need to knowing your doula will be there, and in turn they can relax and enjoy the experience more. - Doulas can help provide support if your labour takes an unexpected turn. Transfers of care, unexpected inductions, cesarean births, NICU and postdelivery complications can all be stressful experiences. Your doula will be there to provide you with information and comfort while you and your medical team decides what is the best route to take. -Studies have proven that having a doula at your birth can effectively help lower your chance of having a cesearean birth, along with many medical interventions. - Doulas provide support after your birth. Postpartum visits offer a chance to provide you with information regarding any of your concerns or questions, from breastfeeding and formula feeding information to tips on how to better take care of yourself during this time. -Many doulas have varied skills. Belly Casting, placenta encapsulation/keepsakes, blessingway/birth celebrations, henna, registered massage therapy, additional post partum support, and even some photography are all skills that are found among the list of Kingston Doulas.
