Kingston Literacy & Skills is proud to participate in Charitable Gaming through Community Spirit Gaming. This ongoing financial support allows us to offer much needed programs and services. When we come together we make things possible for our community.
It's National Volunteer Week! The wonderful folks who volunteer at KL&S provide invaluable support for our programs in many different ways. Our heartfelt thanks go out to each and every one of you! The value of one volunteer tutor, classroom assistant, bingo greeter, Spelling Bee organizer, or Board Member... The power of adults and families in our community strengthening their language and literacy skills The value of one. The power of many. #VolunteersBringChange #NVW2021

Happy International Women's Day! Our friends in our Napanee office put together this great list of books by women authors. Check out your local library for these books and more.
Good news from our partners at Community Spirit Gaming Centre! Kingston Literacy & Skills is grateful to be a recipient of funds raised through Community Spirit. These funds help us provide valuable literacy programming to our community members.
We at KL&S are proud to wear pink today for Pink Shirt Day! We recognize the impact bullying has on individuals and our communities and we are grateful for community leaders like David Shepherd and Travis Price who stand up and speak out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tb2a4nPBgUY
Here at KL&S we love books and we love lists! Recognizing Canadian Black History Month, we combine those loves by highlighting reading lists which showcase great material by talented authors. We encourage you to look to our fabulous libraries here in the KFL&A region for these books and so much more. https://nowtoronto.com//11-books-by-black-canadian-authors/ https://bookcentre.ca/news/black-history-month-reading-list https://www.kfpl.ca//m/2021/02/10/2021-black-history-month
We love the people and stories featured on the CBC Being Black In Canada site. Check it out for information from our country's past, but also news and stories about those making history now. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/beingblackincanada
Family Day weekend is almost here!!! Here are some fun ideas for sneaking literacy opportunities into your Family Day activities. (Don't worry, we won't tell the kids they are learning if you don't).
The Kingston Frontenac Public Library and Black Luck Collective have some wonderful programming scheduled in honour of Black History Month. We were excited to see their online children's storytimes scheduled for February 13th and February 27th. See their post for sign-up details.
In recognition of Black History Month, KL&S honours the contributions of Black Canadians, both past and present and renews our commitment to listen, reflect, and take action to create a more just and equitable world. Check out the Ontario Black History Society for valuable resources and links to online events throughout February.
Kingston Literacy & Skills is pleased to announce that Christianne Wojcik has joined our team as Executive Director. Raised in Louisiana and claiming Kingston as home since 2018, Christianne was recently selected to lead the KL&S team, bringing in a unique combination of experience, vision, and southern charm. With more than 16 years of experience in education, academic leadership, and strategic partnerships, Christianne has applied an unwavering focus on student success to e...ach of her projects. Her history of engaging with organizations facing unprecedented times leads her to joke that she’s always in the right place at a wrong time--launching her career by supporting displaced students in crisis following Hurricane Katrina and, later, guiding university program innovations following the 2008 financial crisis. Creative pathways to success through periods of challenge are her specialty. Looking ahead to life beyond COVID 19, KL&S is excited to have her leading our team! An active community volunteer and life-long supporter of the arts, Christianne is happily involved with groups at the creative heart of Kingston, including Domino Theatre, Kingston School of Art, The Conservatory, and Kingston Arts Council. She’s a voracious reader and theatre lover. Christianne is also a mom, wife, equity advocate, and active online mentor to her former students who study and serve across North America. Welcome to KL&S, Christianne!

Family Literacy Day is today, Wednesday, January 27th. This day was created by ABC Life Literacy Canada to raise awareness about the importance of literacy activities for families. #FamilyLiteracyDay #FLD2021 Family Literacy doesn’t just mean the little ones in our lives and today’s memory from Yusra reminds us of that.
Dream big, and we'll help you achieve your goals! All of our classes are free. Do you need help with professional writing? Math? Computer skills? We can help.
