On this week’s AMBITIOUS BUILDERS we’re heading to New York to visit The Oculus! The Oculus is the newly constructed World Trade Center Transportation Hub, replacing the PATH train station that was destroyed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Architect Santiago Calatrava designed the extravagant winged structure to combine symbolism and function. From street level, the steel and glass structure resembles a giant white bird taking flight. This represents the World Trade Center ris...ing like a phoenix after the tragic terrorist attacks, and stands as a symbol for the resiliency of New York. The combination of glass, colour, and design used for the wings serve to light up the interior of the underground station on sunny days. This light also has a symbolic function. The wings are aligned perfectly so that every September 11th at 10:28 AM (the time the second tower fell) sunlight is perfectly aligned with the longitudinal axis of the Oculus. Representing the end of the tragedy and the beginning of reconstruction. What do you think about this thoughtful hub of transportation?
The exciting $200M Kingsway Entertainment District project was viable 4 years ago, last year, and remains as such today.
For this week’s AMBITIOUS BUILDERS we’re off to see The Wave in Vejle, Denmark. Designed by Henning Larsen Architects, this apartment complex has become a new visual landmark for Vejle. The design of the Wave was influenced by the unique landscape of the surrounding area. While Demark is known for having mostly flat landscapes, Vejle is surrounded by rolling hills and the building itself is situated on the banks of a lively fjord. This 14,000 square metre housing project wa...s recently completed after an 11-year construction process. Ground was initially broken for the building in 2006. Two out of the five towers were completed before the 2008 global financial crisis forced construction to halt. Progress would not resume until 2015, sadly this was two years after the original architect Henning Larsen had passed away. The remaining build team worked hard to finally bring Larsen’s original vision to life. The building now stands with 100 apartments spaced out between the five towers. The peak of each tower contains a double-height penthouse apartment. The distinct wave facade is formed using pieces of terracotta rain-screen cladding, which looks like one solid sheet from a distance. This building is an incredible example of how an environment can influence design. What are your thoughts on this creative residence?
On this week’s AMBITIOUS BUILDERS we’re going down under to visit one of the most iconic buildings of the 20th century, The Sydney Opera House! The Sydney Opera House is a multi-venue performing arts center located on the banks of the Sydney Harbour. This behemoth of engineering sits on 4.4 acres of land and reaches the height of a 22-storey building at its tallest point. The multiple performance venues host over 1,500 performances annually, attended by more than 1.2 mil...lion people. The design for the Opera House was chosen through an anonymous competition, similar to a tryout or a job interview. Danish architect Jørn Utzon was relatively unknown in his field at the time, and the sketches he submitted of his concept for the Opera House were bare-bones compared to other entries. However, the selection committee was blown away by his concept. The shell-like structures surrounding the internal performance venues were way ahead of their time. When construction started in 1959, several structural problems were still unsolved. Several years and 12 iterations later, Utzon and his engineering team partners came up with a ribbed system of precast concrete shells created from sections of a sphere. The shells would later be covered with 1,056,066 ceramic tiles made in Sweden to give them the look of white sails. The project finished after 14 years, opening on October 20th, 1973. Is visiting this performance powerhouse on your bucket list?
Take two minutes today to pay respects to all those who have fought for our country. Their sacrifices have given all of us more than we could possibly know. We are eternally grateful to all those who have served. Thank you all.
On this week’s AMBITIOUS BUILDERS we’re studying at the Kansas City Public Library! The most striking feature of this building is the giant bookshelf façade on the south wall of the building. Each book spine measures 25 feet by 9 feet and is made out of signboard mylar. The structure is made up of 22 books that were submitted by local readers and selected by The Kansas City Public Library Board of Trustees. The titles selected range from literary classics to renowned children’s books such as Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson, and Winnie the Pooh by A. A. Milne. What do you think of this fascinating façade?
Just gonna leave this right here

For this week’s EVENTS AROUND THE WORLD we’re putting on our spookiest costume for Halloween! This Sunday people of all ages will be celebrating by dressing up, carving wicked pumpkins, watching spine-chilling movies, or eating handfuls of fun-sized snacks. Halloween originated from a Celtic celebration of the new year. During this time it was believed that the wall between the mortal world and the spirit world was at its weakest. Some would leave space at the table that... day to allow passed on relatives to join them for dinner. To help guide the souls to their door they would leave out turnips or potatoes with faces carved into them. In the 1800’s millions of Irish immigrants settled in Canada, bringing what we now know as Halloween with them. The phrase trick-or-treat actually has Canadian origins. In 1927 a newspaper in Alberta reported pranksters were going door to door demanding for either a trick or treat. What is your favourite Halloween memory? Let us know!

On this week’s AMBITIOUS BUILDERS we’re travelling to Paris to visit the Fondation Louis Vuitton! This massive art gallery was designed by the legendary architect Frank Gehry. The design of the building was inspired by glass greenhouses and by the image of a sailing ship. That inspiration led to the building being made of two separate types of structures. Twelve large glass and steel sails surround the concrete core nicknamed the Iceberg where a majority of the art is held. The sails not only give dynamic reflections of light and the surrounding water for those outside the gallery but also gives guests inside a spectacular view of the beautiful landscape. What are your thoughts on this spectacular gallery?

Its now time for us all to put this behind us and work together to grow Greater Sudbury, Dario Zulich
On this weeks EVENT CENTERS AROUND THE WORLD, we bring you to the Beijing National Stadium. It served as one of the buildings for the 2008 Summer Olympics and will also be used for the opening and closing ceremonies at the upcoming Winter Olympics. This building got its nickname The Birds Nest for obvious reasons. The building contains twisting steel sections that look very web-like and form the roof. We cannot wait to see this building used again for the upcoming Olympics. Are you excited?
"Were confident in the future and I think council will see it that way." -Dario Zulich Dario had fun chatting with CBC Sudbury the other day! Check out the full interview here: https://www.cbc.ca//sudb/kingsway-arena-proposal-1.5708203

This modern style with sharp edges and reflective glass is certainly eye catching and we love it!
SPACE TO GROW Have you ever tried on a pair of shoes one size too small ? Has that ever happened to you when its the last pair left? At first you only kinda wanted the shoes but now, for some bizarre reason, you REALLY WANT THOSE SHOES! This can be a bit of a nightmare in these moments. You start to tell yourself some comically good lies. My toes will get used to it, the shoes will stretch out, if I curl my toes it will be fine. These are just the lies our subconscious b...rain tells us so that we give in to our emotional reaction. Its not actually a good strategy. The truth is, buying those shoes would be a big mistake. A pair of shoes too small today are still too small tomorrow. Do you know what feels great? Putting on a pair of shoes that fit perfectly. They fit and they match your wardrobe. Now, we are cooking like a BBQ in the middle of summer. Why are we so excited about the Kingsway location? Elbow room, theres lots of it. Not only are we planning for the needs of social distancing in public but we are planning to create a ton of jobs. This isnt just a build an arena and we are done situation. This is a district that will become one of the economic and cultural engines of the community. Built to complement the already existing communities within Greater Sudbury. This is not a scarcity mindset project. This is a mission of abundance. This is not about a pair of shoes that dont fit. This is about creating shoes fit for everyone. The KED team operates two of the biggest sporting attractions (The Sudbury Five + Sudbury Wolves) in the city and we are laced up and ready to build an ICONIC event district that will still have space to grow. This post was inspired by the brilliant Keith Cunningham quote A PAIR OF SHOES THAT DOESNT FIT IS NOT A BARGAIN AT ANY PRICE #GROWGREATER

AMBITIOUS BUILDERS We have decided to create a new weekly series while we move through the necessary stages of one of Sudburys most ambitious projects. The series, not surprisingly, will be called Ambitious Builders. We will share a variety of interesting and unique builds from around the world. There are so many clever builders in this world and we want to showcase as many as possible. They are so inspiring and we want to learn from and them and celebrate their achievemen...ts. Today, we are launching with this ingenious workspace. Although this was built in 1980 we feel like a lot of us, as of late, can relate to the at-home work set up. Philip Johnson took it to the next level when he built himself a glasshouse working space. Hopefully, he wasnt big on throwing stones. What do you think, would you enjoy working in a space like this?
Dario Zulichs heart is pounding as OHL gives green light for 2020 season (headline)... Yup, you can say that twice! Who else is excited about this news?
I still believe that these sports teams are the spirit of our city. I believe these teams represent the soul of our city, something that the whole city of Sudbury can rally around and support, not unlike the way countries support their teams during the Olympics. It brings the people of cities together and it reflects their confidence and their outlook on the future. Dario Zulich
