Kinship Dog Training

A quick review of the rules of dog ownership in Toronto. Please note the prohibition of prong collars

"Seventeen studies were identified that include surveys of dog owners, intervention studies, and reports from veterinarians....Despite the methodological concerns, it appears that aversive training methods have undesirable unintended outcomes and that using them puts dogs’ welfare at risk. In addition, there is no evidence to suggest that aversive training methods are more effective than reward-based training methods. At least 3 studies in this review suggest that the opposite might be true in both pets and working dogs. Because this appears to be the case, it is recommended that the dog training community embrace reward-based training and avoid, as much as possible, training methods that include aversion.

It is concerning to any Trainer using science-based, proven force-free methodology and technique, to see another dog training show promoting harmful myths, methods and tools. Canine Intervention is in the top 10 list on Netflix Canada. That will likely mean more dogs subjected to harm in the name of training. Slip leads, choke chains and prong collars in addition to some sort of proprietary system in the hands of un-trained humans spells t-r-o-u-b-l-e. If you see or hear someone using these methods, please let them know there are better ways to build an understanding of good behaviour.
