Ways that I reminded myself of a dog this week & how it reminded me that behaviour is n o r m a l Almost 2 months ago I walked past a store & a guy who seemed to be struggling with mental health turned and spit on me intentionally, unprovoked. Today, I walked past that same store as I have many times since then, but when a random guy walked passed me at that same spot today.. I got nervous, froze & avoided him. Why today? It has been 2 months since that happened! This g...uy who looked nothing like the first guy! --> This reminded me that we can only ever speculate pieces of our dogs reactions & interpretations of the world around them & that their reactions are always valid, even when they seem random & out of the blue. My partner entered the room and I started singing, completely unconsciously I caught myself & wondered.. would I be singing this random song outloud if he didn't enter the room, when I was relaxed a minute ago? What were my intentions with singing - was I just excited or attention seeking --> This reminded me that our dogs aren't intending to do 'bad' things, just sometimes it is an unconscious response/vocalization from their emotional response. I was walking without any dogs () & jumped when I saw the mail man.. he didn't surprise me, I was just anticipating having to turn 'on' as I'm used to walking with dogs who would need my full attention when they see a mailman --> This made me think about how reactions can become habits through repeated rehearsal - changing an emotional response also means preventing the opportunity to rehearse these responses as that will deepen the reinforcement & repetition history!
