Squamish (Skwxwú7mesh) In its own meaning, the Mother of Wind. It is hardwired for adventure and the outdoor recreation capital of Canada. I first came to Squa...mish over a decade ago for a Kiteboarding event, when I was only 17 years old. The breath taking views, like minded outdoor enthusiasts and by far the best kiteboarding location in Canada, it was love at first sight. I vowed one day to call Squamish home. 2016 I made the move across the country to make Squamish my home base. Being a professional Kiteboarder it was the Spit and the Squamish Wind Sports Society that became my second home and family. Some of my fondest memories are at the Squamish Spit. The Spit is Canada’s premier wind sports’ location. It offers steady winds from April to October. It is home to a family of water and wind sports enthusiasts. It is a place where wind and water sport enthusiasts are born, professional kiteboarders and windsurfers have traveled to train and compete, and many have come to spectate, participate, or just take in the best views of Squamish. The Squamish River Watershed Society (SRWS) has been working to improve the salmon habitat with its on going Central Estuary Restoration Project. SRWS and Department of Fisheries (DFO), intend to remove 1 kilometer of the Squamish Spit Road, effectively cutting off all access to the Squamish Spit before the end of the 2021. This will be done without building an alternative road or bridge access that was outlined in their original project description. To be clear, this is not fish versus kiteboarder; we are in full support of the restoration project to improve the salmon stocks and habitat. Instead, we are fighting for a mutual resolution that includes maintaining access to the spit for all users. This could be a change in the access point or a bridge. The SRWS is rushing to spend the funds that have been allocated to them before the end of the year. Spending public funds to remove public access fails to realize the long-term vision as it was outlined in their project description, resulting in a rushed project that has a massive negative impact on recreation users, jeopardizing their safety and impacting the local economy. Squamish (Skwxwú7mesh) The Mother of wind, hardwired for adventure, Canadas outdoor recreation capital. Is this what its come to? Let’s work towards a common goal that respects the fish and other animals that live in these waters as well as all the people that recreate on, in and near them. Please feel free to share. The Ultra started as a long-term project by designer Mark Pattison, to build an inflatable kite that stayed in the air as long as possible and was durable enoug...h to use for everyday freeride and surf. We wanted to test the limits of the materials and our load frame, our knowledge of shaping and flying characteristics to make the kite as a simple and as functional as possible.
