Terrace eligibility for appointment booking remains at age 60 and over, and Indigenous age 18 and over. However, anyone over the age of 18 can register at https...://www.getvaccinated.gov.bc.ca. This is a two step process to allow us to better plan the number of appointments required in communities based on registrations by age group. Once registered, you will be notified when it’s your turn to set an appointment. Unfortunately, the provincial call centre has, in error, booked people into appointments who are not eligible - they are not over the age of 60, Indigenous and over the age of 18, or clinically extremely vulnerable. People who do not fit into an eligible category may be rebooked if there are people who are eligible and did not get an appointment. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we are working very hard to ensure the most vulnerable are vaccinated first. We are committed to ensuring everyone who wants a vaccine receives one by July. It’s important to remember that the public health orders and guidelines currently in effect are critical and we are asking people to continue to follow these.

The Kitimat General Hospital Foundation would like to thank Rio Tinto for their donation of 23 iPads to Long-Term Care, Assisted Living and Acute Care Units in Kitimat, Terrace, Smithers, Burns Lake and Vanderhoof. The devices are having a very positive impact by reducing feelings of social isolation and improving quality of life for residents. The completed project was just over $18,000 but the impact it is having on the lives of the residents, health care workers and thei...r families is immeasurable. The devices are being used for residents to connect with their families and friends through virtual facetime visits. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, visitors to long term care are required to mask and gown-up during their visits; however, with the virtual visits both parties can see each other’s face and expressions as well as interact with more than one family member. These virtual calls also allow family members that live out of town or the country to speak to their family members. Face to face conversations keep the residents engaged in the phone call longer, and their faces light up when they can see their loved ones on the screen. The iPads are also used for leisure, for example, to do jigsaw puzzles, which allows residents with arthritis to just use one finger instead of using the whole hand to grab puzzle pieces which can be painful and uncomfortable at times. Word search, listening to music, watching movies or videos of babies on YouTube are some other activities that they are used for. Staff members also benefit from this technology as the iPads are used for medical videoconferences and check-ins with doctors. During these calls residents and their family members can be easily included and involved with discussions about their health and care planning. Martha Flores, a Foundation Member and Care Provider at Mountainview Lodge says: During a difficult year, we are truly grateful for such a considerate donation that has made such a positive impact to us here at Mountainview Lodge. Rio Tinto has continued to be a generous and thoughtful contributor to our communities, and we are thankful for their continued support and investment in the wellbeing of our community members. Rio Tinto BC Works General Manager Affonso Bizon says: Technology has become an even more important aspect of all our lives during the fight against COVID-19. Employees with loved ones in care suggested we look at how we could help connect families. Through the collaboration of the Kitimat General Hospital Foundation, Northern Health and Rio Tinto, our employees and community members now have access to iPads to keep in touch with their family members in care facilities, whether they are in the same community or live far away and do not have the option to visit in person. The wellbeing of our employees and their families is a priority to Rio Tinto and this project helps us all to feel a little closer to our loved ones.

Pictured here are Darlene and Randy Tait along with Fern Fontes (Kitimat General Hospital Foundation and Kitimat Valley Housing Society Board Member). Darlene and Randy are donating their second installment of $12,000 a year for the three years, a total commitment of $36,000 by the end of 2021. Randy and Darlene challenge other Kitimat households and businesses to meet or exceed their pledge of support. A donation of $1,000 a month over the next three years by 100 househol...ds means a $3.6 million infusion of cash for this project. We truly believe that if we can do it, there are 100 other households that can do it too, said Tait. KGHF takes on many different projects for fundraising and the Dementia Care Home is one of them and the one that Randy and Darlene are challenging citizens to donate to. There are three ways to donate to the project: Online via Canada Helps: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/explore/charities/... By mail: Kitimat General Hospital Foundation, 920 Lahakas Blvd S., Kitimat, BC V8C 2S3 Contactless pickup: Call Cynthia at (250) 639-6484 *Please select the "Dementia Care Home" project.

Here is a message from our partner Erin Best about her story of giving One of the most fulfilling things in life is giving. Think about when you give your child a gift for their birthday and we see the look of joy and appreciation on their face. Or When you give a gift to a friend for no other reason then you saw this and though of them. The best thing about giving is when you give without the expectation of receiving in return. When giving comes from a truly genuine h...eart space, the universe knows. When the Kitimat General Hospital Foundation asked me if I was interested in collaborating with the KGHF, I didn’t hesitate; not because I was newer to town but because it was terrific way to support a community foundation. It was a way to support the town I get to call home. One of the first things I did when I came to build a brand around my Real Estate business was to introduce myself to local businesses and share their story with other new-comers to town. Kitimat is a lovely community with a terrific spirit and I wanted to be able to share that with other people who were thinking of moving here or remind everyone here about the wonderful places we do have here. In return, I’ve made some really incredible friendships. I hope there’s a time for many of you reading this, that we become friends and get to know each other as well. We may not all need to use the Kitimat General Hospital, but there are many who will use it in the future or know someone who needed to. This campaign to #strengthenourfrontlines is a way that we can do so in a very simple manner and I hope you all take a moment to donate to this community cause.
