Beautiful day but too much air pollution in Kitimat. Visible on the east-side ? and from RioTinto (on-going problem). Posting for the record and also wondering if anyone knows the reason for the east side of the Douglas Channel smoke (first photo).
Private member bill to address environmental racism is before Parliament and will be voted on this week. This bill would require the government to collect data on the location of environmental hazards across Canada, as well as the link between race, socioeconomic status and health outcomes.

Youth climate case involving 15 children from across Canada is moving ahead in the courts. These youth say their right to a healthy environment is not being met by government inaction on climate change.
KTCAC completed our third summer of SO2 passive air sampling in Kitimat; we also increased our SO2 sampling in Terrace. We hope to present to Kitimat and Terrace city councils in the new year, and share our results. This picture is taken at the Radley Park (Kitimat) where we did notice a fair bit of black matter on the sampling shelter. This has motivated our group to purchase a PM2.5 monitor (Purple Air) which we plan to install soon.
Covid outbreak declared at LNG Canada's project in Kitimat.
Cedar LNG (Haisla Nation) and Pacific Traverse Energy are now in partnership indicating both projects are still live. It's been awhile since there have been any updates especially from Cedar LNG.
No burn day on Nov 11 2020 according to the venting index based out of Terrace. Why is there a burn going?
Let's celebrate our local talent and natural assets. SkeenaWild Film and Photo Festival is happening online November 12th!
Here we go again! This is the same company that wanted to build a plastics plant in the city of Prince George and relocated due to citizen concerns over air pollution. Project is in concept phase with a location somewhere in the Kitimat Valley.
Disappointing news that the youth climate case has been dismissed by the Federal Court. This case involved youth from Smithers and Haida Gwaii who say gov has not done enough to protect against climate change.
Just who is protecting our vital resources like air and water? Canada has the obligation to protect on behalf of all citizens per environmental lawyer Chris Tollefson. We really hope the court will allow this case to proceed to trial to further advance rights to a safe and livable environment. Kudos to these young climate activists and the teams working hard on this case.
Key ridings include Skeena. Will it be Ellis Ross Liberal or back to the NDP, Nicole Halbauer? Reason being for leader visits to Kitimat and Terrace. https://vancouversun.com//for-the-ndp-to-win-a-majority-th

Youth climate case goes to court in Vancouver Sept 30 & Oct. 1. Canadian youth say climate inaction harms young people disproportionately and does not protect their rights. The inland port proposed for Terrace would be located in the heart of the city beside the new hospital. Concerns being cited are air pollution, light pollution, noise pollution, and transparency of political process.
Hazy skies over the Douglas Channel tonight. Some of this haze is due to PM10 pollution from the industrial side of Kitimat (west) while we are also seeing what looks like fire smoke. Unfortunately the air quality monitor which would be reporting pm2.5 was down for several days (Haisla Village) so we don't have accurate reporting of the actual pollution in our air.
Let's hope these fires get under control soon.
The Great Bear Rainforest carbon project is the blueprint for carbon offset programs in Canada, but has struggled to find buyers. An explanation of how carbon offsets work.
Hazy skies these days over Kitimat especially over the west side with what looks like smoke coming out of Rio Tinto mixing with construction particulate matter from the LNG Canada site. Unfortunately air quality monitoring doesn't seem to reflect the actual state of our air as well as pictures taken from a few kilometres away. This picture is taken from the north in late afternoon.
Top Speed Energy is proposing to transport LNG via truck and would be moving on our narrow highways, already considered safety risks.
Covid case confirmed at Sitka Lodge in Kitimat. This lodge houses workers for LNG construction.
The federal government needs to bring CEPA into the 21st century and legislate the right to a healthy environment to protect Canadians, especially those in vulnerable situations, from environmental pollution. Please add your name to this parliamentary petition to update CEPA that includes your right to a healthy environment.
