April 28th is the National Day of Mourning. This is to pay tribute to the workers who have died, were injured, or made ill from their work. It is also a day on which to collectively renew our commitment to improve health and safety in the workplace and prevent furthers injuries, illnesses and deaths. On April 28, the Canadian flag will be flown at half-mast on Parliament Hill and all federal government buildings. Traditionally, employers and workers have observed the Nationa...l Day of Mourning by lighting candles, laying wreaths, or wearing commemorative pins, ribbons or black armbands. In light of COVID-19, the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety encourages organizations, communities, and individuals to pause for a moment of silence at 11:00 a.m. on April 28. To mark Coast Mountains School District’s commitment in observance of the National Day of Mourning on April 28, the flags in Coast Mountains School District will be lowered to half-mast early Wednesday morning, April 28 and raised early Thursday morning, April 29. As of Tuesday, 3.4+ million people were registered to vote in B.C. Voting is a right and a privilege that we as British Columbians should participate in. Take the time to educate yourselves and do your own research. Think about what’s important to you, what’s going on in our community and learn about all the candidate’s perspective when it comes to the issues facing our region. The Kitimat Chamber of Commerce held a public forum on October 7 to give community members a chan...ce to ask the local Skeena candidates. Business leaders and residents had an opportunity to hear each of the candidates speak and reveal their platforms. The Chamber was appreciative that all 3 candidates from our riding were able to attend and share their vision’s. The Kitimat Chamber of Commerce acts as a community champion by advocating on behalf of the local businesses to promote progress and economic growth. Chambers also coordinate and participate in activities that support this community. The Kitimat Chamber remains nonpartisan to better serve the community.
Why Small Business Week Oct 19th-23rd is important especially now... Small and medium-sized businesses are the foundation of the Canadian economy, accounting for 99% of all businesses. The SME sector is responsible for more than 95 per cent of new jobs in Canada over the past decade. COVID-19 significantly impacted business owners here in Kitimat as well as every where else in the world and has a massive effect on the employees. Despite these unparalleled complexities, entrep...reneurs have risen to the occasion and have found ways to keep their doors open. We salute businesses as they provide essential services, create, and maintain local jobs, and are invaluable to our community overall. Now more than ever, we need to celebrate their achievements as well as find ways to help them through these unprecedented times. The Kitimat Chamber of Commerce is spending Small Business Week establishing ways to help all businesses within our community. The mission of the Chamber of Commerce is to promote a favorable business climate for our membership and community: to work on issues of community interest and provide business leadership for improvement of the economic, political environment and quality of life. Stay tuned for more information at the end of this week on how we will continue to educate, advocate and support local business.
