Sunday fun fact: co-owner @riakitsch spent months volunteering in a biological reserve in Ecuador in 2006. She learned a lot about biodiversity as she helped build a community garden with local women & other volunteers (pictured) where the focus was on securing a variety of complementary food-producing plants. The task took about a month as they collectively planned and planted. This photo was taken at the end of the rewarding project, which was also the beginning of a sustainable & reliable food source for the locals.

What can you say when where you came from changes? In Jan of 2019, temperatures swiftly dropped from seasonal averages to -25 degreescentigradeon the East Kelowna Bench. Our estate vineyards on the flats were traumatized by the cold. While the Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris blocks showed promise for training new trunks from shoots, the majority of the Maria's Block Riesling irreversibly succumbed to the elements . If you know our story, you know that the Maria's Block propert...y held a lot of beginnings (the first grapes planted, the wedding of Trent and Ria, where their babies were born, the first epic parties etc ), so you can imagine how hard it was to face the decision to pull the vines. But there actually wasn't a decision to make, there was a truth to accept. The truth that mother nature holds the cards, that viticulture is complicated and affected by hundreds of variables, the truth that trying to keep those vines alive would have been all about our ego and not about the land . Could that site continue to provide amazing East Kelowna wine grapes? Yes. Did we learn a TON from the 'failure'? Without a doubt. Are we persevering, humbly learning and excited about the future of Kitsch? Abso-fricken-lutely. For now, though, we won't be farming this small 1.89 acre plot and will instead focus on the 11.5 acres of Pinot Noir at our new site and the existing 10.5 acres at the Estate vineyards - working towards biodynamic practices and honing our farming skills . This story was really important to share as today we celebrate the release the final vintage of 2019 Maria's Block Riesling with you . We hope you enjoy this wine available online now (only 250 cases made!) and can taste the many years of love, care, energy, decisions and seasonsthat come together in every bottle of Kitsch Wines .
