Ingredient Spotlight: Mica Mica is a nature-identical mineral that we use to colour most of our soaps. Naturally-occurring mica is often found near toxic minerals and isn't safe, so we use a nature-identical synthetic version. I know some people are nervous about anything synthetic, but it's so safe even Storm can wear it! Comment to tell Storm she looks pretty with all her colours.

Ingredient Spotlight: Cornflowers! These adorable little flowers are also called Bachelor's Buttons because eligible young gentlemen used to wear them in a buttonhole of their suit to indicate they were in love or ready to court. They are used to carry the bergamot flavouring in the earl grey tea that garnishes our Tea, Earl Grey, Hot Soaps! I'm always proud when the first flowers bloom, but I'm extra proud of my cornflowers this year. They are real troopers, still flowering! While blue is the most traditional colour for them, they were bred to come in other colours, too, and make eye-catching garnishes for various bath products. Keep an eye out to see what other colours we're growing!

Ingredient Spotlight: Eucalyptus Of course, since it's the perfect complement to last week's peppermint spotlight, I had to give some time to eucalyptus. You've probably heard of the eucalyptus plant that koalas love to eat, but what you might not know is that a compound found in eucalyptus oil, called cineole or eucalyptol, relieves cold symptoms like cough frequency, nasal congestion, and headache by decreasing inflammation and mucus buildup. Unfortunately, eucalyptus oil is toxic to eat, so you can't get your dose of eucalyptol that way, but inhaling it may be a way to get some of those amazing benefits. Next time you have a cold, try an Encourage-mint bath bomb, or our Mint To Be bath salts.

Self-Care Sunday idea: Spend the night at a hotel in your city One of my favourite things about traveling is getting to pamper myself by enjoying a nice hotel. With COVID, I've been staying local and trying to avoid going anywhere, but that hasn't stopped me from enjoying a hotel stay in my own neighbourhood. This is the tub at the beautiful Fairmont Pacific Rim. And yes, I brought one of my favourite Secret Garden bath bombs.

Ingredient Spotlight: Peppermint Whether it's peppermint essential oil or peppermint leaves, I love this invigorating little plant packed with medicinal benefits. The cooling sensation of peppermint can soothe inflammation, and it just feels plain good. I also love the smell. My favourite way to enjoy peppermint is paired with eucalyptus, in our Mint To Be bath salts or in Encourage-Mint soaps. If you prefer peppermint without the eucalyptus, you can wait for our Winter Wonderland products to come back around Christmas, or ask us about a custom order.

Ingredient Spotlight: Rose! These were the roses I got for Valentine's Day, but roses are lovely any day of the year. Rose contains antioxidants, and soothes skin irritation. It has also been used to enhance mood or relieve headaches. Try it out in our rose soaps or luxuriate in our Flora Good Time bath salts.

Ingredient Spotlight: Olive oil While perusing our product line, you may have come across our Apollo soaps. These are a pure Castile soap, meaning they are made only with olive oil (the original olive-oil soaps were from Castile, Spain). With just three ingredients (olive oil, lye, and water), it is the "purest" soap possible, and is popular with those who have sensitivities or allergies to other kinds of oil, or prefer a simpler soap. Castile soap is a gentle soap that cleanses without stripping the skin of its natural oils. It doesn't lather much, but it still gets the job done.

Ingredient Spotlight: Coconut oil Coconut oil is made of up to 65% medium-chain fatty acids (a type of saturated fat) which is what makes it solid at room temperature. While most people associate saturated fats with being unhealthy, saturated fats can have many health benefits when applied to the skin. For example, lauric acid makes up about 49% of coconut oil. This fatty acid kills harmful microorganisms, like the kind that cause acne or athlete's foot. Coconut oil can al...so reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and improve skin hydration.
