The capelin are spawning on the beaches. And the whales are following them into shore. Being out on a boat among them is an extraordinary privilege. But even watching from the land is a wonderful experience. My old friend, the BBC naturalist and whale specialist, Mark Carwardine, told me years ago when I was thinking of buying a house here, "Newfoundland has the best land-based whale watching in the world". These photos prove it. These whales are just offshore.

This wonderful little red house is for sale. I will be moving to LA to be with my daughter and grandchildren. And I have a son in London and another daughter and grandchild in Manila so won't be able to spend enough time in beautiful Newfoundland to make keeping my house worthwhile. Another reaoson I love Newfoundland. Magnificent sight watching the gannets' aerial ballet as they dive bomb into the ocean after the capelin. And where there are capelin there are also whales and dolphins in the area. So the spectacle is quite extraordinary.
