I worked in grocery all through the first isolation order and didn’t get the chance. I’ve just had the week off cause I got smacked down with a nasty cold Got tested, it’s not the vid But it was kinda nice to just read, and write, drink tea, think, meditate, paint, stretch, make herbal remedies, clean my house and write some more. I still didn’t have enough time to bust out the sewing machine like I wanted. Is there such thing as too many hobbies? Orange shirt day To remember those who were lost, to celebrate those who survive Today, I want to share calendula. To me, this flower is a symbol of healing, the ongoing healing that is happening, that must happen, from inter generational traumas. So that the gaping wound between two cultures, between divided peoples, between families torn apart, between individuals and a healthy future in which they can thrive, may be seen, understood, salved, and finally, healed. Every ...child matters. Northern Alberta: a small town encircled by a reserve. Growing up where I did, and how I did, chafed by the friction between two groups of people with a complicated history between them, I witnessed the hurt that wounded people inflict, on themselves and others, on the earth. In the settler community, a lack of connection to ancestors and to land caused environmental destruction. In the cree community, decades worth of colonization caused deep wounds on communities and individuals. An elder taught me that: whether we choose to heal or to harm, our actions ripple back seven generations, and forward seven generations. I often hear, among other settlers I grew up near, the narrative that there are many stories of people who said they were helped by the residential schools; helped, to learn to read, write, speak English and navigate this new culture thrust upon them. While I acknowledge this narrative as true, I too have heard those stories, what I think deserves the space to be heard now are the stories of those who were not helped, who were harmed, who did not survive. Let’s listen and validate the pain that individuals and communities feel around such an earth shaking trauma: of losing their children, their language, their culture.
