Spring is well on its way to Kiwanis Pavilion. We recently noticed a new guest in our garden, and it seems there are now two more on the way! Mama Hummingbird was a bit miffed at the intrusion, but kindly let us snap a few pictures of her darling little eggs. When will they hatch? We also received a new batch of chicken eggs from Bees Please Farms through their Hatch the Chicken program, so watch this space for chick hatching updates as well!... What signs of Spring are you noticing?
It's almost tax season! Learn about the benefit and credit payments you and your loved ones could be eligible for and services that can help you with your taxes in this free webinar hosted by the CRA.
Our Short & Sweet newsletter is approaching 100 issues! Over these long months, we have been incredibly inspired by the resilience and love in the Pavilion community of residents, families, staff, the Board and Foundation members, and friends of the Pavilion. All of you have contributed amazing support and care on this wild pandemic journey. Please tell us how you’ve done it: 1) What brought you joy despite everything? ... 2) What are you inspired about for 2021? (besides the COVID vaccine!) We’re hoping to get 100 submissions to include in the 100th issue! Please contact Suzanne (Social Worker) at [email protected] or 250-598-2022 ext 223 with your submissions. Thank you all so much for your love and support, and we hope you are staying warm and well this holiday season. http://www.kiwanispavilion.ca/programs/family-bulletin/
While we have to do things a little differently this year, we're still making things as merry as possible! Activity staff and residents have decked the halls and we're ready for a little festive fun. One of the favorites has to be this slightly less "traditional" tree. We hope you're staying healthy and warm as the weather cools off! Check out our latest Short & Sweet newsletter for a peek into what we've got happening for the holiday season.
Our ghostly garden in all its glory! This was a very popular activity and we hope to add even more eerie items in the future.
How was your Halloween? We had a splendid time in our spooky scary courtyard! The Activities team went all-out bringing the festivities into the garden for everyone to enjoy. It was especially spectacular at night!
Halloween is just around the corner, and the residents and recreation staff are looking for pumpkin donations to help us turn the 1B courtyard into a SPOOKTACULAR display of jack-o’-lanterns and Halloween fun! We are accepting pumpkins by donation between October 15th to the 23rd. If you can spare a squash, please drop it off on the table outside the front door between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm on any of the following days: October 15th, 16th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, and 23rd. We ask that you wear a mask and maintain social distancing. #halloween #pumpkincarving
Sunday breakfasts are back this year with just a little twist. Starting October 18th, enjoy a delicious take-out breakfast from the Willows Beach Tea Room, every Sunday morning through April 2021. Funds raised by the breakfasts go directly to enrich the lives of our residents here at Kiwanis Pavilion. Thanks as always to our wonderful Kiwanis Pavilion Foundation and the Kiwanis Club of Oak Bay for their hard work.
It's the sweetest time of the year! Pavilion staff and families are invited to join our annual group Purdys Chocolatier order. By ordering together, we can save 25% on delicious Purdy’s chocolates just in time for the holidays! All ordering is done online, so you don’t need to brave busy shopping centres. Delivery is scheduled for mid-December. For full details and to get in on the goodies, email [email protected]
Welcome to the big wide world, little chicks! Incredibly, ALL 7 of our eggs hatched into adorable baby chicks! They began hatching Tuesday, with 3 fully hatched by the end of the day. The other 4 hatched overnight that night. The babies had to spend a little time drying off inside the incubator before finally transitioning to their enclosure this morning. They are now cozily clustered under the brooder (or "electric hen" as we have dubbed it). Everyone who's seen them is ...already in love -- they're a big hit with the residents, as always! They'll be with us two more weeks before they head off to Bees Please Farms; plenty of time for our fluffy little celebrities to go on a whirlwind tour of the building to meet all of their adoring fans. #hatchthechicken
New season, new chickies! We recently welcomed a new batch of 7 eggs from Bees Please Farms for our third hatching project. They have been incubating for a bit and are due to hatch some time late next week. We candled them all earlier today and things are looking pretty good! Cross your feathers for us!
Families of Kiwanis Pavilion! The Office of the Seniors Advocate of British Columbia has launched a survey to ensure your voices are heard. Share your experiences on the impact of visiting restrictions in long-term care and assisted living that have been required in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This survey is available for submission online, by mail, or by phone until September 30, 2020 at 11:59pm. Visit www.carehomevisits.ca for full details and to fill out the survey.

Yesterday staff cyclists and Foundation board members of the Kiwanis Pavilion celebrated the opening of our brand new bike enclosure! This secure, lit enclosure will be instrumental in keeping our bikes secure... And our cycling staff as well! (Don't worry, we eventually let them out. ) A big thanks to our Kiwanis Pavilion Foundation for funding the construction of this great new addition to the Pavilion.

We are so excited to announce the arrival of our BRAND NEW BUS! The bus has some finishing touches yet to be applied, but once it's ready to go we plan to have an official ribbon-cutting ceremony. Stay tuned! Thank you so much to Jon at The Bus Centre for the safe (and socially distant!) delivery of our new ride.

There are now 61 issues of our Short & Sweet newsletter! These bite-sized updates have been going out almost every day since March, reporting on daily life at the Pavilion. They will be taking a little break, returning early next week. If you'd like to catch up in the meantime, all of the S&S newsletters can be found at http://www.kiwanispavilion.ca/programs/family-bulletin/
Farewell, sweet chicklets! Though our time together was brief, we lavished them with as much love and attention as we could. They swiftly grew from sleepy fluff-balls to rowdy teenagers - every day they seemed to get bigger and stronger. Two weeks from their hatch day sure flew by! As bittersweet as our parting was, we know that the chicks are ready and eager to spread their wings and explore the big wide world at Bees Please Farms!
