And there it is ... the 4th season! A couple weeks ago exactly on the first day of winter we got some white stuff falling from the sky
Same message from a different sender ;-)
The kiwi vines in 3 different saisons. Let’s see if we get one with some snow on it this coming winter! #spring #summer #fall #winter #kiwivine #beautifulbritishcolumbia
Let's realize it's still fall and in our climate nature is still providing. We can appreciate the season we are in right now especially on a sunny day like today.
Here is something for the Vancouver Island Folks. Check out this Artisan Tour which is happening now till November 29th. Be your own guide. Experience creativity, enjoy visiting and meeting a variety of artists and local farmers.
The Arguta Kiwi pickers don't need a ladder. The vines are supported on overhead wires and the fruit hangs down. The last of the green skin ones will be picked this week, then the harvest begins on the rosy colored arguta which is called Anna. Come to the Cedar Farmers Market this Sunday, with every $20.00 purchase customers receive a free Kiwi Cook Book.
Did you know that there are many kind of different kiwis grown at Kiwi Cove Lodge? We are exited to begin the picking of arguta kiwis. As you can see in these photos they are smaller and have no fuzz. They can easily being eaten like grapes. We will be selling arguta kiwis at the Cedar Farmer's Market for the next few weeks. Come to the market on Sundays 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. You can also place an order by phoning the lodge: 250 245-8051 No walk-ins please.
The branches are heavy with new fruit and we’re not only growing kiwis!

During a pandemic there are signs everywhere and it's important to pay attention to them. Here's one of signs posted at K.C.L.
This is a time lapse video of the rising tide which we took a view days ago on our beach.

Production of a good crop of kiwifruit requires an adequate supply of pollen from male vines to be moved by pollinating insects to the female vines. Kiwifruit flowers are visited by many insects, especially syrphid flies, small native solitary bees and bumble bees. In this video you see a very busy honey bee working on a male kiwi flower
Hello Friends, in the next weeks we are going to post a bit about some interesting Kiwi Fruit Facts. Kiwi Talk Part 1: Male and Female Kiwi Blooms Male and Female Kiwi vines bloom in June. After the bees spread the pollen, the Female vines produce fruit. Flowers of both sexes produce pollen but no nectar; at times, they have a distinct but subtle odor. Pollen is the only reward available to insects visiting kiwifruit flowers. Do you have any questions about kiwis ? Shoot us a message or comment bellow.

A guest testimonial from Simone and Derek, Cowichan Bay: "This spring when COVID-19 interrupted our European travel plans we decided to spend our vacations on Vancouver Island. For every month from June until October we booked a mini holiday close to our home in Cowichan Bay. We started with a 3 day break at Kiwi Cove Lodge, near Ladysmith, only 30 minutes drive away. Using Kiwi Cove Lodge as our base, and the local knowledge of our host we have found and explored all sorts ...of 'hidden gems'. Social distancing? Easy at Kiwi Cove Lodge! They have plenty of space inside and out, benches to enjoy the sun and views, campfire pits. Not to forget a walk under the kiwi canopy! When we decided to have a picnic under the kiwis our host was happy to help us out with plates and cutlery. Our travel plans include Port Alberni, Comox, Tofino, Uculet, Mayne Island and Pedder Bay." Thinking about booking a stay? Tell us Simone and Derek sent you and receive a free gift from Kiwi Cove Lodge!
