Although the Park is closed for the Winter, we wanted to share some of our favourite sculptures as they rest, tucked in for the Winter season. Not to worry, soon enough the Prairie Crocuses will be poking through as Spring arrives for a new season at the Park. Each sculpture residing at KOAC has been graciously donated by artists who have been deeply touched by the indelible contribution Harry Kiyooka and Katie Ohe have made to public art in Alberta. Many of the pieces have ...led lives of great adventure and all need refurbishing and installation in site specific locations around the Park. If you are interested in the arts acquisition and restoration process at KOAC, please consider making a donation or becoming a yearly member of the Park to help support our goal of adding one new piece per year! Special thanks to @brycemeyer for his continued dedication to capturing the park with beautiful imagery throughout the seasons. #contemporaryart #stormking #ysp #sculpturepark

Patricia’s Wild Weave Facilitating Artist Patricia Lortie This project by KO Arts Centre Resident Artist Patricia Lortie finds a way to bring people outdoors and connect with Nature. Lortie’s artistic practice takes root in her physical and emotional relationship with Nature. Her work is a visual expression of feelings of freedom, communion and humility generated by her encounters with the natural world throughout her life. Her work explores our place within the ecological sy...stem as the essence of who we are. Patricia will demonstrate and guide her students through the grass weaving exercise during a live webinar. The workshop encourages people to walk through the land to find grass and dried twigs to overcome isolation and enclosure. It is a simple act that directs our attention towards the world that surrounds us creatively and to live in the moment. KOAC’s Weavers of Grass will be invited to share their works with the community through social media and in a virtual KO Arts Centre show. You can register for Wild Weave here: https://www.koartscentre.org/create-with-koac/ Please support the Centre and our work in your community, your donation this month will help us to achieve our programing goals, and create an opportunity to win a $20,000 prize from @Canadahelps, the online giving portal. With more than one hundred outdoor and indoor pieces, the focus of the sculpture park’s distinguished permanent collection of Canadian and European modern sculpture is on large abstract welded steel works from the 1960s to the present. The goal is to preserve and showcase important carefully selected quality works of art. Among the monumental pieces already in place are those by Ray Arnett, Roy Leadbeater, Michael Sandle (British), Charles Robert Boyce, Alex Caldwell & Katie ...Ohe. Nature is our gallery We often think of art viewing as an indoor experience, moving through museums and galleries to experience painting and sculpture. But some of the best art can be seen blended with nature as is the case of The Kiyooka Ohe Arts Centre outdoor sculpture collection. With 20-acres of landscaped lawns, fields and woodlands KOAC encourages viewers to fan out, mill the grounds and stumble upon works of art against nature finding the allure of art and environment. The sculpture park features a botanic garden as part of a contemplative environment to foster creative thinking and imaging for each visitor through engagement with art and nature. Admission to the grounds is free, Guided Tours of The Residence and Studio Collection Tours are available by appointment. Please support the Centre and our work in your community, your donation this month will help us achieve our programing goals, and create an opportunity to win a $20,000 prize from @Canadahelps, the online giving portal. Please see the link in the Bio to donate or donate directly at canadahelps.org/en/dn/8789 Our Video features Kathryn Fodchuk Dobbin's steel kinetic 'Dandelion'. #Sculpture #HarryKiyooka #KatieOhe #GivingChallengeCA #yycarts #AlbertaArt #kineticart #contemporaryartists #

Our values reflect the founders’ original conception: Preserve the land Engage the local community Engage arts groups and working artists Maintain good stewardship of The Kiyooka Ohe Arts Centre.... As Katie Ohe likes to put it, the focus of the Centre is on the three R’s Retreat, Research and Residence. The Kiyooka Ohe Arts Centre concept comprises an art gallery, studio spaces for emerging artists, a research library and vast collection of artwork amassed over more than six decades, all surrounded by a public botanic sculpture park, in a rehabilitated wetlands and a woods sanctuary. Today, we celebrate the National Indigenous Peoples Day for all the diverse histories, languages and cultures that enrich our province. @indigenouspeoplesday. Because KOAC is all about experiencing abstract art in Nature, it recognizes it stands on the land of the Blackfoot, Kainai, Peigan, Sarcee and Stoney peoples. We remain committed to the Articles of the Treaty signed on the 22nd day of September 1877 between them and her Majesty, on behalf of the Canadian people. Further, we are committed to abiding by and fulfilling all the stipulations, obligations and conditions therein contained to the Chiefs as if we ourselves were one of the contracting parties at Blackfoot Crossing. Please support the Centre and our work in your community, your donation this month will help us to achieve our programing goals, and create an opportunity to win a $20,000 prize from @Canadahelps, the online giving portal. The KO Arts Centre has the support of our artist community! They've been the big source of our operational funds so far, more than 100 artists have donated work to our Art Auctions! We want to thank them, so we're sharing our space with them, as they have shared their work with us. Starting with Peter Deacon, RCA , with many more to follow. Thank you each and every one! Peter Deacon is a well-known Canadian artist, Professor Emeritus of Art, and a member of the Royal Canadi...an Academy of Arts. His work is represented in dozens of major public and corporate collections and numerous private collections. Artist Statement " The collage pieces are based upon the interplay of components that I refer to as Prime Elements. The components such as geographic location, personal experience, prime numbers, and primary colors etc. are irreducible in the sense that I regard them as being absolute. The work submitted makes particular reference to locations on or near the Continental Divide that are initially documented by photography. The photographic image is then used as one of the collage components in the work." A faculty member at the University of Calgary Department of Art -1975 -2015, Peter was a recipient, in 2004, of the Alan Blizzard Award, for cross-disciplinary innovations in higher education. Peter earned his MFA Degree at the @Slade School of Art, University of London. He won a Prix de Rome award, and lived in Rome for two years -1970 -1972 . He was Artist in Residence at the University of Nottingham in England -1973- 1975. Peter became a Canadian citizen in 1979 and resides in Calgary, Please support the Centre and our work in your community, your donation this month will help us to achieve our programing goals, and create an opportunity to win a $20,000 prize from @Canadahelps, the online giving portal.
