#GivingTuesday #KleinerGives: Did you know more than half of the food produced in Canada is lost or wasted? Not only that, a third of that wasted food could be rescued to help those in need across the country. That’s where programs like the Food Stash Foundation come in. The Food Stash Foundation is an organization that takes surplus food from suppliers and redistributes them to families in need across Vancouver. Through their rescued food box program, they deliver food ri...ght to the doorsteps of their members. They also do partnerships with other local non-profit food security programs that received extra food. Since 2016, they have rescued over 60,000 pounds of food per month! Their goal is to fill the food insecurity gap and bring awareness to how our food choices impact the environment and our health. Wasted food produces methane gas which is bad for our environment, and not only that, all the wasted food can be useful considering how many people go hungry in our community. The Kettle Society started in 1976 to support people living with mental health issues and are experiencing homelessness. They facilitate many programs such as mental health drop-ins, a health clinic, providing supportive housing, employment services, enrichment programs (such as a writing group) and many more. Organizations like The Kettle Soc...iety are a necessity in our community and we hope that you will join us and consider donating to them -- just $35 provides new socks and blankets for 5 vulnerable people. As we continue our #KleinerCoatDrive, we are featuring an organization we are donating our coats to each week. This week is the Triage Emergency Shelter operated by Rain City Housing. Located at 707 Powell Street, Triage Emergency Shelter is the RainCity Housing first response to folks experiencing homelessesness, and houses folks who have been turned away from other shelters due to complicated health issues and history such as addiction, trauma and mental health issues. The purpose of the Triage Emergency Shelter is to provide a place where people can get together and be connected to housing options as quickly as possible. People stay longer at Triage than traditional shelters, allowing a sense of community to flourish.

This week’s #GivingTuesday features another organization we are donating to for the #KleinerCoatDrive, The Vi Fineday Family Shelter Society. The Vi Fineday Family Shelter society is an emergency shelter/transitional house that aims to provide as home-like an environment as possible for all clients. They provide food, laundry, child/homemaker services, supportive counselling, emergency clothing and referral and liaison to other agencies. At The Vi Fineday Family Shelter Society, staff are friends and advocates, and they offer services on a non-judgmental and culturally sensitive basis. Today’s #FeatureFriday takes on an artistic route, because we’re featuring local artist David Robinson! David Robinson is an Algonquin artist from the Timiskaming First Nation. Robinsons‘ style can be understood by the way he considers time, space and ways in which the sculpture form is created. Although Robinsons’ contemporary sculptures bring to mind visionary sculptors Constantin Brancusi, Henry Moore and traditional First Nations carvers, Robinsons’ work is not fashioned... directly by their works. However, Robinsons sculptures share a way of exemplifying the simple forms that reflect archetypal representations of their subject matter. As we move into the colder winter months, cozying up to a hot meal can be comforting. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to this comfort, especially during these difficult times due to COVID-19. September is #HungerActionMonth, and last week we have donated to #ProjectIsaiah2020 to participate. This week for our #GivingTuesday, we are continuing by donating to A Better Life Foundation which in partnership with Atira Women's Resource Society and BC Housing, provides safe, ...dignified access to nutritious, delicious daily meals to our neighbours that need it most through their #DailyMealProgram. #BeingHungrySucks, and daily meals can inspire hope, health and upward mobility. They’re also currently running a #FoodWasteRecovery program, partnered with Urban Fare and FoodMesh. This is a program where they take perfectly edible food from grocery stores that would have ended up in landfills and use them for their daily meal program. This program, in just 2.5 months time, provided the equivalent of 6,033 extra meals and saved 6,967 tons of CO2 emissions. But they need $20,000 to cover the operating costs. Today’s #FeatureFriday is all about Yuriy! Yuriy is one of our veterans -- he’s been with us for four years (and counting)! When Yuriy is not driving our trucks, he sails boats and flies airplanes ! He’s even flown an airplane to a polar circle before! How cool is that? Yuriy has lived in four different countries and speaks four languages: Russian, Ukranian, Czech and English. He’s read War and Peace twice.... We’re so lucky to have a reliable guy like Yuriy on our team. The next time you book a move, ask for Yuriy!

Our last #TipThursday was all about what to keep But what do you do with the things you no longer want? Our tip is to sort them! This minimizes waste. Start by labelling three boxes with junk, donation and recycle Junk is for what you want to throw out ... Donation is for what you want to donate Recycle is for the things that can be recycled This #tip makes it very easy for you to figure out what you want to take during your #move and what you don’t want! This is also a great tip for when you’re going through your garage or storage that you haven’t touched in a while. If you don’t want to move it yourself, we also take things to the junkyard or donation centres with your move. Just let us know! #WeCanHelp

Food insecurity is an issue that many people of our community face, especially during these difficult times. That’s why for today’s #GivingTuesday, we are donating to #ProjectIsaiah2020, run by Jewish Family Services (@JFSvancouver). The Project Isaiah Campaign is an effort to stock the Jewish Family Services FoodBank for the next 4-6 months with nutritious and healthy pantry items for the most vulnerable members of the community. There are two ways you can get involved. Th...ere’s the shop and drop where you can shop for the items and drop them off at VTT and Beth Israel Parkade through a COVID-19 safe drive-through. The list of items can be found on their website, https://www.jfsvancouver.ca/get-involved/project-isaiah/. Another option is just simply donating to their Virtual Community Food Drive. If you make a donation, the rest will be taken care of by the Jewish Family Services. Join us and donate today to this amazing initiative, to assist those with food insecurity. Are you an avid #baker or a gourmet #homecook? Not sure how to pack the pots, pans and baking trays you’ve collected over the years? For today’s #TipThursday, we have 3 tips on how to pack your #pots, #pans and #baking trays. Sort your items by size and shape for easier stacking into a box.... Protect fragile pieces. Metal items like pots may not need to be wrapped. Pans and items with surfaces you don’t want to scratch you can wrap with packing paper individually. Glass pieces like pot lids or baking trays you can use a bubble wrap for extra protection. Place heavier items at the bottom of a box. Placing heavier items at the bottom of the box prevents other, more fragile items from getting broken. Music can be used therapeutically for people who have physical, emotional, social, or cognitive deficits. Music Heals serve...s all groups of people, including but not limited to people with dementia or alzheimers, people with brain injuries or people with physical disabilities. They work with patients in children’s hospitals, seniors’ centres, palliative care, AIDS & HIV programs, at-risk youth, habilitation, and bereavement support.
