Fire Prevention Week - October 4-10 The Kirkland Lake Fire Department will be on site at Grant Home Hardware Building Centre each morning (Monday - Friday from 10 am - 11 am) of Fire Prevention Week to talk to you about fire safety. This year’s FPW campaign, Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!TM works to educate everyone about the simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves, and those around them, safe in the kitchen.... Did you know? Cooking is the #1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires in the kitchen.
When you change your clocks this weekend, please remember to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Check the manufacturer's instructions or website, and replace any expired alarms. Test all your alarms monthly!

The Kirkland Lake Fire Department had a visitor at the Firehall on November 25th, Abbigail Gauthier was Fire Chief for the day! She won that by doing a home escape plan, she was picked due to following everything on the list which included 2 ways out, smoke alarm locations, meeting place, and extinguisher locations. Abbigail did some daily activities with us and finished the morning with a lunch from McDonalds. A huge thank you to McDonalds who were wonderful hosts providing lunch and treats for Abbigails family and the fire staff. Congratulations to Abbigail!

With the subzero temperatures please take special care to ensure your outside exhaust vents are clear of snow and ice. If these become blocked, carbon monoxide has no place to escape and can build up in your home and cause severe illness or even death. There are many different types of exhaust vents that your house may have. Here are a couple of examples of what to look for and maintain. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact your heating contractor or by... messaging us on here. You also can call the Fire hall at 795-567-3400 ext 2. Stay warm and always be Fire safe!!!
Welcome to our house!

Wildfire Updates NORTHEAST REGION... Regional Fire Situation - July 8, 2018 By early evening, there were seventy-eight active forest fires across the Northeast. Thirty-three of these fires are not yet under control, while forty-five are either being held, under control or being observed. Restricted Fire Zone declared in Northeast Region Due to the extreme fire hazard, several recent periods of heavy lightning and the large number of wildfires burning, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has implemented a Restricted Fire Zone in some areas of Northeastern Ontario as outlined on the interactive fire map. During a Restricted Fire Zone, the use of open fires such as campfires, or burning of brush or debris, is restricted. Failure to comply could result in fines of up to $25,000 and three months in jail, as well as financial responsibility for the costs incurred in fighting a forest fire. Portable gas or propane stoves are permitted for use for cooking or warmth, though they should be closely monitored. Portable charcoal BBQs and Hibachis are not permitted unless within 100 metres of a dwelling, or within an organized campground. Commercial campground operators may allow their guests to enjoy campfires during a Restricted Fire Zone period provided they meet certain conditions. The Restricted Fire Zone is a temporary measure to reduce the number of new human-caused wildfires as the Aviation Forest Fire and Emergency Services branch of the OMNRF expects the elevated forest fire hazard to continue into the foreseeable future.
Just a reminder to check your smoke alarm and CO alarm batteries tonight when you move your clocks ahead! Everyone has a responsibility for fire safety!
Kirkland Lake Fire Services reminds everyone that the Ontario Fire Code requires smoke alarms to be installed on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Kirkland Lake Fire Services reminds you to NEVER put water on a grease fire!
Prevent Cooking Fires, Watch What You Heat!
Cooking Safety Careless cooking is the number one cause of home fires in Ontario. Most of these fires start because pots and pans are left unattended on the stove. If you must leave the kitchen when you are cooking, turn off the stove. While cooking, always keep a large lid nearby. If a pot does catch fire, slide the lid over the pot, then turn off the stove.
Electrical Safety Tips Appliances should be plugged directly into an outlet. Never use extension cords unless specified by manufacturer’s instructions. Check electrical cords for damage such as fraying or nicks. Damaged cords can expose wires and result in shock or fire hazard.... Avoid running electrical cords under rugs, which can damage the cord and cause a fire. Extension cords should be used as a temporary connection. If permanent wiring is needed, a licensed electrician should install outlets. Extension cords should not be linked together. Instead use an extension cord that is long enough to do the job. Overloaded outlets can cause overheating/fire hazard. Licensed electrician should install additional outlets. All electrical outlets near water should be ground fault circuit interrupters. GFCIs provide electrical protection. Always replace blown fuses with ones of the proper rating. If the problem continues, call an electrician. If fuse blows or circuit breaker trips often, get problem fixed by certified electrician before turning breaker back on or replacing fuse. http://www.mcscs.jus.gov.on.ca//Electrical%20Fire%20Safety
Smoking Careless smoking is the leading cause of fire deaths. If you know someone who smokes be sure to remind them of these safe smoking habits. Smokers should use large, deep ashtrays and never empty ashes into the garbage. Never smoke when tired or after drinking. If someone in your household smokes, make sure your home is well equipped with smoke alarms to alert you in case of fire. http://www.mcscs.jus.gov.on.ca//Smoking%20Fire%20Safety%20
Kirkland Lake Fire Services reminds you that campfires are the leading cause of preventable wildfires in Ontario. Drown your campfire!
Kirkland Lake Fire Services urges you to remember Fire Safety at the cottage this long weekend! Cottage fire safety tips: Install smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas of homes, cottages, cabins and seasonal homes.... Install carbon monoxide alarms outside all sleeping areas if your home, cottage or cabin has a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace or attached garage. Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms at least monthly or each time you return to the cottage. Pack a new smoke alarm and extra smoke alarm batteries in case they need replacing. Develop and practice a home escape plan to ensure everyone knows what to do if the smoke or carbon monoxide alarm sounds. Know the telephone number for the local fire department and your cottage’s emergency sign number, in case of emergency. Clean barbecues before using them. Keep an eye on lit barbecues and ensure all combustibles, as well as children and pets, are kept well away from them. Fires can happen when barbecues are left unattended. Keep barbecue lighters and matches out of sight and reach of children. Remember to bring a flashlight with extra batteries. Inspect heating appliances and chimneys before using them. Check with your local fire department or municipality to determine whether open air burning is permitted before having a campfire or burning brush. If open burning is allowed, fires should be built on bare soil or on exposed rock. Remove leaves and twigs from around the fire to keep it from spreading. Always keep a bucket of water or sand and a shovel close by and supervise the fire at all times. If you must smoke, do so outside. Keep a large can with water nearby so cigarette butts can be safely discarded. If you drink, do so responsibly. Tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption are contributing factors in many fires and can lead to serious injuries. Burn candles in sturdy candleholders that will not tip and are covered with a glass shade. When you go out, blow out!
