There is still time to stop Ford’s government and Laurie Scott from privatizing a generation of long term care beds. Public money that should be going into the care and support of residents and staff, is instead going to private corporations who funnel it into the pockets of shareholders and executives.
Seems like for-profit homes who have had years to make rooms more comfortable and home like for residents, yet profiteered off the pandemic to charge more for single rooms. This is disgusting. Bottom line is: for-profit LTC must not exist in Ontario and all across Canada. If the Ford government doesn’t change that, no cookies for them.
An important break down of the recently introduced Long-Term Care Act. Please read below.
This is an important distinction relating to recent announcements. This announcement was not a reinstatement of annual surprise inspections. The private LTC lobbies vehemently against these surprise inspections and it looks like Ford and Rod Phillips are still in their pockets.
The Kawartha Lakes Health Coalition would like to see how exactly this money will be directed into staffing levels and how it all will be distributed, said Miller. Staff are overworked and underpaid. PSWs and nurses should not have to work in multiple different homes to earn a living. If this money is to go to hiring more staff without addressing appropriate staffing levels and full-time equivalents and opts to precariously hire more staff who may be hastily trained, the situation in long-term care will remain. After the tragedy that occurred in LTC, how is it that the government can reward them with more money instead of requiring them to use the money they already have to hire more staff? ... Until Ms. Scott firms up her support of these standards, no real change will occur and is simply posturing for her election in June 2022.
Keep this in mind when you hear Rod Philips or Doug Ford speak about the PSW hiring blitz.
Great day out protesting at Laurie Scott’s office. Although we wish she and the Ford Government would listen to common sense reforms to long-term care, it seems our protesting will have to be more about her losing power! Kawartha Lakes Health Coalition wants: 1. All profit removed from LTC... 2. Implement 5 national standards 3. Increase staff and make sure that they have a fair wage, benefits, job security, and supplies See more

"Shocking," "appalling," "offensive" and "disappointing" are just some of the words critics are using to describe the Ontario government's latest plan to train ...personal support workers (PSWs) in the province. "Their lethargy is profound...delaying training and recruitment. In the meantime nearly 4,000 residents have died in long-term care in the last year," said Candace Rennick, Secretary-Treasurer at CUPE Ontario.
Caressant Care and the Ministry of Long-Term Care should have stepped in when the outbreak was first declared to help with infection control. Thank you RMH for stepping in and continuing to help!
It’s time. #10plus3 #Canadians4LTCstandards
