Today is world hug day, but since our world has changed since Covid came to town, we aren’t hugging many people anymore. So we deem it World Hug an Animal Day. (Please be gentle and remember many animals may not actual hugs). Spend time with those fur babies and remember hugging produces oxytocin and oxytocin reduces stress. Hug on friends! (Safely of course ).

HOW TO TELL IF YOUR PET IS IN PAIN Cats are especially well-known as masters of disguise and will do almost anything to pretend everything is fine. This is a survival instinct but you know your pet best so, if you notice a change in appetite, behavior, sleeping pattern, or if your pet experiences an accident even if they seem fine, contact your veterinarian. Signs that might indicate pain in your cat or dog:... Lose interest in their toys or in playing Sleep longer or be slower to wake up Change their eating habits like chewing more slowly, laying down to eat or not eating at all. Hide from busy family activity Growl, hiss, or snap when approached, especially around unpredictable young children Watch your pet’s body language for signs of pain: Flat ears when approached or touched. Your pet anticipates that their pain may be increased with petting or picking up. If your pet’s ears move like satellite dishes away from each other or flatten against the head, they are anxious about something. Eyes may become squinty or open wide in surprise. When pets anticipate that movement or interaction is painful, they will squeeze their eyes closed just like we do. If they don’t realize that something was going to hurt, their pupils will dilate, and you may see the whites of their eyes. Body postures become tight as they protect a painful body part. Painful limbs may be held out at abnormal angles. If a pet is experiencing pain in their abdomen, their bellies may feel very hard and tense. They don’t chew their food or only chew on one side of their mouths. Dental disease can be incredibly painful for pets. Pets who become disinterested or bored with previously loved treats and chew toys may have dental, mouth, or throat pain. Limping and walking stiffly. An animal who limps may have pain when walking normally & could be trying to ease their discomfort by changing the way they move, which will add strain to the rest of their body to compensate. Please contact us or your veterinary clinic for a physical examination and pain assessment if you are concerned that your cat or dog may be in pain.

In light of the deeply sad news regarding the two cats in Vancouver who suffered as a result of the at home neuters, one lost its life and the other had to have a major surgery. We want to spread more information about the BCSPCA’s low cost spay & neuter program. Vancouver SPCA has seen 3 cases in the last two weeks of people trying to do at home neuters on their cats. We strongly urge anyone with a cat or dog that needs to be spayed or neutered to contact the SPCA throug...h the email below to request an application. We understand that the financial state of the world right now is bleak for many, if you need help reach out to programs like this. Alternatively, if you are looking for a new pet, any cats or dogs adopted through the SPCA have already been spayed or neutered before being adopted so it is included in the price. Should dogs eat grains? Many dog parents free who opt for grain-foods believe grains are simply fillers in dog food to keep prices low with little to no nutritional value. Dog parents have even associated grains to food allergies that affected their pet in some upsetting ways. But grain-free dog food isn't necessarily better for your pet. Here are some common grains used in dog food and why you should consider keeping them in his dish. ... When looking at the list of ingredients in your dog's food, you might see grains such as: Barley, Buckwheat, Corn, Oats, Quinoa and whole grains such as corn provide dogs with important and perfectly digestible nutrients including protein, vitamin E, and linoleic acid. It is those nutrients that are crucial to a dog's overall health. The most important thing to remember is that the food you choose provides your dog with complete and balanced nutrition. This is true whether or not the food contains these grains. Another important thing to know, grain-free and low-carb are not one in the same. To replace grains, grain-free food often uses ingredients such as potatoes, apples, and peas. Some grain-free pet foods contain carbohydrate levels similar to or even higher than dog food containing grains. A frequent reason we hear dog parents say they chose to buy grain-free foods is because their dogs suffer from allergies. Veterinary Practice News interviewed four board-certified vet nutritionists about allergies and the role grains play in them. The nutritionists told the magazine corn, wheat, and soy are rarely the cause of food allergies. If you suspect your dog suffers from a food allergy (symptoms may include itchiness, hair loss, inflamed skin, sores, and scabs) talk with your vet about the issues your pet is experiencing. Then, under consistent professional treatment, you can determine to which ingredient your pup is reacting adversely through some careful food trials. For certain dogs that are sensitive to grain, you should look for a high-quality grain-free dog food that still provides balanced nutritional content. How do you know if what you're feeding your dog is high in quality? One way to determine if the manufacturer is meeting high nutrition standards is by looking to see whether its food meets guidelines established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), which sets standards for pet foods in the United States. In order for a dog food to be marketed as "complete and balanced," it must meet these nutritional standards established by AAFCO (both the Royal Canin & Hill's brands we carry meet or exceed them). We are always happy to answer nutrition questions so that you can make the best choice possible regarding your pet’s health and nutrition. Our veterinary pet food lines are backed and formulated by scientists who spend their days creating the best foods for our furry companions, we want what’s best for your pet and so do they.

5 Halloween Safety Tips for Pet Owners 1. Costumes We can admit that a Dachshund in a hot dog costume or a tutu is adorable but most pets really don’t appreciate being put in them. Never leave your pet unattended while wearing a costume, although the costume may look cute, it may be tight, or have loose strings that can get caught in things. You would never want your pet to chew off a piece and swallow it. Foreign body surgery is an emergency and we all want to have fun this ...Continue reading
