I'd like to take this time to remind everyone about garage safety. This is my friend Kelly. He lost his life on Saturday morning due to a fire and explosion the... evening before while working on his vehicles in his garage. He was just shy of 24. Vehicles and mud trucks were his passion and he always lived on the edge. The investigation concluded a grinder and a gas tank were the ignition of the fire. At work we practice working safe. Please take safety home with you. Think about your surroundings before you fire up your grinder or the welder. Periodically check your cutting torches for leaks and shut them off when not in use. Even wear some safety glasses when doing simple jobs. We're all at fault for cutting these corners. I want all of you to be safe. My friend at 24 years of age and so much energy and drive for his passion of vehicles has been taken way too early. He will not see his child born. I will never be able to hang out with him and work of vehicles. So please be safe in the garage and think twice before you start wrenching. Thank you and be safe. See more

Providing first aid during the COVID-19 pandemic can raise questions around safety and transmission. Outlined below are the first aid protocols that should be followed when attending to an unresponsive person. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, the COVID-19 situation is rapidly evolving, and an individual's risk is variable depending on location. If someone’s heart stops, and the First Aider is concerned they may have had respiratory symptoms, it is at the indiv...idual's discretion to perform or not perform mouth-to-mouth breaths based on personal preference. It’s still important to call emergency medical services and find an AED. If the individual chooses to perform breaths, they can also use a barrier device, such as a pocket mask, to help protect themselves. CPR with breaths is recommended for people who have been trained in CPR, but as an alternative, hands-only CPR can be performed until help arrives if the First Aider is unsure about putting their mouth on a stranger’s mouth, or has concerns the person may have COVID-19. If the individual chooses to perform hands-only CPR, they should first call 9-1-1, lay a cloth, a towel, or clothing over the person’s mouth and nose to prevent any potential spread of the virus through contaminated air or saliva, and then push hard and fast in the centre of the person’s chest until advanced help arrives. If the First Aider believes the person may have COVID-19, they should state their concerns to the emergency response telecommunicator so everyone who responds can be aware of the potential for COVID-19 transmission.

In accordance to the measures being taken by health authorities across the country to help stop the spread of COVID-19, the Canadian Red Cross is strongly recommending to cease in-person training until further notice. As Canada’s response to COVID-19 continues to evolve, please know that the Canadian Red Cross will still be available for support. Because many individuals need to maintain a valid first aid certification for workplace occupational health and safety regulation,... the Canadian Red Cross has reached out to provincial and territorial regulators to ensure that those individuals can meet this requirement; all Red Cross first aid certifications (which would have expired March through June 30, 2020) will be considered valid 90-days beyond their expiry date. These certifications will also be accepted for recertification courses when in-person training resumes. See more
