22 Crew of the STI San Telmo are quarantining off of the Town of Port Hawkesbury in their ship due to a number of cases of COVId-19 on board. A group of people decided it would be nice to gather some items to send to the ship as an act of kindness and to keep them entertained during their quarantine. The Town of Mulgrave was happy to contribute, thanks to Heather Brophy Brennan for gathering some Scotia Days Festival swag to include in the package, along with some Eastbound CD’s/swag and puzzles to keep them busy over the next couple weeks. #WorkingTogether #KindnessAlwaysWins

Littering in and around town has been a conversation at the council table in recent meetings. So today, myself and my 5 & 10 year old gloved up and hit the road for a clean-up. In approximately an hour and half, we picked up 3 large garbage bags full of trash and a small bag of recyclable bottles. Among the typical garbage that we are accustomed to seeing everywhere such as fast food cups and bags, some common items we found were flyers, cigarette cartons, gum packages, pull... tabs, and plastic. So. Much. Plastic. Plastic shopping bags (at least we won’t see these as frequently due to the shift in stores), ziplock bags, sandwich bags, empty toilet paper plastic bags, straws - the list goes on. In addition to all that, we also found a toaster, old car parts, a garden fence and a cooler bag. I should mention, all this was found on a 0.2 km stretch, one side of the road only. As we are walking along, my five year old looks up and asks Mom, why do people throw their garbage out like this? It’s making the Earth very sick, and it makes me really sad. We are better than this. We NEED to be better than this. We need to be better for a number of reasons - first and foremost, for the environment. There are a lot of things we don’t have control over, but the choice between throwing something out the window or keeping it in your vehicle until you get from point A to point B should be a pretty easy one - one that we can control. We need to be better for our kids, as they learn by example, so let’s lead as such. We need to be better for our neighbours and our community. We live in the most picturesque town, so let’s prove it, have pride in it and keep it clean. Littering is not cool. Littering is not pretty. Council is working at putting together an Anti-Littering Campaign, but we want it to be creative and fun while still accomplishing the ultimate goal - feet on the streets to make littering obsolete. We’d love to hear your creative ideas to help us reach this goal. Drop a comment below with ways to reduce littering in and around our town, as we navigate our way through the development of an Anti-Litter campaign. Please share.

Hats off to the Mulgrave Recreation Department for reaching this milestone after much work fundraising for the construction of our new Fitness Centre. Tremendous community and business support, along with a grant from the province is the backbone of this project, and it is so moving to see everyone pull together to see this come to fruition. They are not quite at their fundraising goal and are still seeking donations, so if you or someone you know is in a position to support... this new development, please reach out to Heather Brophy Brennan. A new amenity for residents to utilize and enjoy - I am motivated by these types of new developments in town. The Mulgrave Memorial Centre is continuing to build, grow and be busier with rentals, and the addition of a Fitness Centre will certainly be a great one! Stay tuned to the Recreation Facebook page for more details on the Fitness Centre as they become available in the coming weeks and months.
