As we get closer and closer to the first camp, I have been reflecting on my own experiences with summer camps, and on the things that were valuable to me growing up. As a boy, my parents did their very best to get me to different places on summer holidays. They wanted me to know that life was larger than the small mining town I grew up in. I don't know that I would have seen the world the way I do if I didn't have parents who would indulge my curiosity, or bring me to places that would foster the simple idea that "The world is big". The Wide World of Martial Virtue Knight Camp does its part in telling that story. The story of the middle ages, knights, and chivalry, is a large one. It spans centuries, and many nations and languages. From Scotland, to England, to Aragon, Catalonia, Burgundy, Gascony, Swabia, Austria, Venice, Florence, and Naples; there's a wealth of stories to tell about martial arts, virtue, and heroism. But these aren't the only ones. The world is bigger than Europe. This summer, we're proud to announce that we're going to start teaching about the history and virtue of other warrior classes from around the world! Every week we will spend time on Friday mornings talking about a different group of warriors from around the world, and from different points in history. The Mamluks of Egypt, the Samurai of Japan, the Sikhs of India; we will be bringing in experts in both history and martial arts to help share these stories and show just how big the world of martial virtue is.

**This Year Knight Camp Schedule** The schedule is largely similar to previous years, with a few notable changes. The things that are staying the same are: Virtue - We will continue to gather and discuss our ten knightly virtues at the beginning and end of day, and recognize the virtue of the students of Knight Camp!... Before and After Care - We still have accommodations for families that need some more flexible hours in drop off and pick up times, purchase before and after care while registering your child, or buy it as you need it one day at a time Sparring - Each day will have a group activity and safety talk. Playbuilding - Learning about how to practice and build up simple sword fights. Sparring - Free form combat between two campers. Tournament - A single elimination tournament, fought for the accolades of the camp! Pas d’Armes - A special type of medieval tournament where the campers can show off with their favourite weapons, and fight opponents in a variety of fascinating scenarios. The biggest change is that where we used to have martial and academic lessons, we now have blocks I and II. In any given block, one household will be learning a swordplay lesson, and the other will be doing an academic activity. In block I, the red household will be doing an academic activity and the black household will be doing a martial lesson, and vice versa in block II. Weather permitting, we will take the martial lessons outdoors to Harbour Green park to give the students lots of space to swing their swords around, and lots of time in the sunshine. We Can’t Wait to Get Started! Knight Camp holds a very special place in the hearts of all of its instructors and volunteers. We’re very excited to see all of you in the studio on the path to virtue and mastery!

With a promise of new adventures comes a new plan to undertake them. Let’s take a look at how we’re scheduling and organizing the new format of Knight Camp. Households Each week, the camp will be split into two different households, marked with either red or black bands, who will choose a mighty title for themselves. These households will learn, train, and practice together in preparation for the great Deed of Arms on Friday afternoon.... Academics In previous years, we would divide the academic portion of our day by rank. This year, due to reduced staffing and attendance, we will be having everyone work together in an academic activity that is tailored to each camper’s level. Households will start with heraldry. Students will have a chance to improve their knowledge, make new shields, or upgrade and modify existing ones with things like new straps or a leather edge for the shields. Once everyone has a shield painted and constructed, the household will collectively choose the curriculum that they’ll follow for the remainder of their time. They can decide to learn about leatherworking and make themselves belts, bracers, and other accessories; they could receive a lesson from our museum and be guided through the process of making a polearm; or they could go to the archery range and learn about how to shoot some of the new bows that we have added recently! Curriculum The curriculum remains largely the same, with the notable removals of wrestling and group battles. Besides the immediate public health benefits, this change will allow us to focus much more on swordplay in our martial lessons, and move more immediately into sparring games! To be continued...
