My name is Savannah Holzapfel and I am a Registered Massage Therapist at Knots in Knead. In high school, I discovered my fascination for human biology. The interconnectedness of the body drew me in and inspired me to learn more. During this time, I was involved in two motor vehicle accidents that left me struggling to move my neck and upper body due to whip lash. It was then that I discovered the incredible healing power of massage. After many hours of treatment and asking my... massage therapist way too many questions, I had my mobility back and was more interested than ever in learning more about massage. After graduating high school and taking two years off to work and travel, I decided pursue my interests and delved into the world of massage therapy. In September 2018, I was accepted into the 3000hr Advanced Clinical Massage Therapy program at MaKami College. I instantly fell in love. My enthusiasm grew as I learned more about the mind body connection and how to apply my knowledge to hands on treatment. I’m a small town girl that found out early, from family members, that I was intuitive, had strong hands and had a knack for massage. ... After high school, I worked a few different places such as; working with the elderly in a seniors lodge, in customer service, and administration in the oilfield. All of which I loved, but they didn’t give me that sense of desire, drive, and deep satisfaction by being able to help people. It was after being laid off from the oilfield that I decided to pursue my dreams! Something about when a door closes a window opens? Well, that was my opportunity to enroll in the Northern Institute of Massage Therapy in Red Deer Alberta. I was quickly enthralled in learning how the body works. All the little intricacies of muscle insertions, how everything is connected, and how to use trigger points and other modalities to help reduce muscle pain and tension in the body. I took Relaxation Massage in the first year of school, but the second year delved deep into the Advanced Lensen and Therapeutic Treatments Program for Clinical Assessment and Correction Specialization. This program is designed to give manual osteopathic techniques used to realign bones, joints and muscles with the emphasis on acute and chronic pain found in the soft tissues and associated structures of the body. Needless to say, this was definitely right up my alley! Positive human touch is an integral part of human interaction. Whether it’s a warm embrace, a reassuring hand on the shoulder or one arm linked through another, physical contact is a large part of how we show concern and establish camaraderie with friends and loved ones. But as we practice social distancing to prevent the community spread of COVID-19, platonic physical touch among friends and colleagues is off limits. Hugs, high-fives, friendly pats on the back or anything th...at breaches the six-foot rule are now taboo. Human beings are wired to touch and be touched. Our wiring system has touch everywhere, so it’s difficult for us not to think about physical contact. When physical contact becomes limitedor, in some cases, eliminatedpeople can develop a condition called touch starvation or touch deprivation. Touch starvation increases stress, depression and anxiety, triggering a cascade of negative physiological effects. The body releases the hormone cortisol as a response to stress, activating the body’s flight-or-fight response. This can increase heart rate, blood pressure, respiration and muscle tension, and can suppress the digestive system and immune systemincreasing the risk of infection. Skin is the largest organ in the human body, covering us from head to toe. A 2018 study by scientists at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee found that skin communicates positive and negative touch stimuli to our sensory neurons.The outermost layer of our skin, called the epidermis, is predominantly made up of billions of keratinocyte cells. The keratinocytes release a chemical called adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which activates receptors on the sensory nerve to convey the sensation of touch to the brain. If a baby is born prematurely, the baby may be in the NICU [neonatal intensive care unit], but the mother is still asked to go to the NICU a few times a day to hold the baby and put the baby on her chest, even if they’re not breastfeeding, Shah explained. We know that this bonding, this human-to-human touch, is important for the growth of that child. Even as adults, touch helps regulate our digestion and sleep and boosts our immune systems.

If you feel in any way unwell, if you have a sickness of any kind, you must cancel your appointment. No services will be preformed on those who are sick or feeling unwell. 3. Clients should arrive no more than 5 minutes before the expected appointment time. If you arrive before this time, please remain in your vehicle until 5 minutes before your appointment time. This is to help us keep our waiting area from exceeding its maximum recommended capacity. 4. Where possible please be prepared to pay by contactless methods (e.g. tap, or eTransfer) if not set up for direct billing. Double check with the therapist as to preferred methods of payment.
