Implemented as part of the nation's response to COVID-19, the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) helped many people through difficult and challenging times. However, there was also confusion regarding who qualified and on what terms, and this changed throughout the pandemic. Now, we are joining Social Planning Council of Winnipeg & Campaign 2000 in their call for CERB Amnesty to ensure those who may still be struggling are not forced into further poverty. Sign-on action alert! In times of crisis, we need to support one another. Basic needs are essential and as cost of living increases, we need to increase support for those most vulnerable. This means the Government of Manitoba must comprehensively address poverty and homelessness, and to assist in stoping the spread of COVID-19 must take immediate action to: 1. Increase the EIA allowances for single adults & for people with disabilities and transform EIA into a Liveable Ba...sic Needs Benefit. 2. Fully exempt the CERB, CRB and other federal COVID-19 recovery measures from EIA claw backs to ensure EIA benefits are not interrupted or reduced. "Some much-needed, significant investments in housing, social assistance, child care, and meaningful employment supports would have been a better use of public resources to help people made even more vulnerable by the pandemic, and support the entire province's economic and social recovery from COVID-19"

Tomorrow (Fri) is Child Tax day, so if you have steady income, why not wait a few days to do any shopping to make space for those who have been waiting to buy essentials (and also may not have credit cards and therefore cannot shop online)?Tomorrow (Fri) is Child Tax day, so if you have steady income, why not wait a few days to do any shopping to make space for those who have been waiting to buy essentials (and also may not have credit cards and therefore cannot shop online)?

From the start, we’ve been assured that we are all in this together. Dr. Tam knows better. Some of us are well-insulated from COVID-19, while others can’t escape it. For poor people and other marginalized groups, they make this a syndemic, far more dangerous than for those better off.

"Advocacy groups like Make Poverty History Manitoba have said a monthly increase like that could make a significant difference for Manitobans who live in poverty, and Donohue agrees. "That would go a long way," he said. "That would help people keep their fridges full. They wouldn't be so reliant on food banks, they'd be able to have more of a social life as social as you can be during the COVID, that is. They'd be able to afford things they normally couldn't afford."... That stability means more than single influxes of cash."

"What the announcement means is EIA recipients in Manitoba will have their assistance cheques clawed back by 70 per cent after the first $200 in federal benefits, says Make Poverty History Manitoba. As with similar rules applied after CERB first took effect, only a handful of federal beneficiaries will continue to receive any provincial assistance, said Josh Brandon, with the anti-poverty coalition’s steering committee. He called on the province to provide more help to those ...experiencing poverty, especially amid the COIVID-19 pandemic. "Manitoba’s EIA rates are woefully inadequate, leaving the poorest Manitobans at risk of hunger and homelessness, while providing no room within their household budgets for any of the basic necessities to help them survive this public health crisis," Brandon said in a news release. "Manitoba should follow the lead of British Columbia, the Yukon and Northwest Territories, which have so far exempted federal benefits in their financial resources calculations for individuals and families who depend on EIA."
