One of our favourite things at the Academy is seeing our students achievements in each step (to black belt and beyond!), and the strength and belief in themselves that is earned along the way! More so than just achievements, it’s the personal journey that each student goes through to reach each next step and seeing what they are personally capable of. Let’s be honest, trying something new can be nerve wracking (no matter your age or experience!) Hear it from some of our adult students... it’s totally normal to have some doubts or fears before starting! But they didn’t let that hold them back. If you’ve been thinking about trying martial arts for your kids or for yourself, just go for it!(*Once our doors are able to be open*) ... The biggest regret we’ve heard from a lot of students is that they didn’t start sooner. Also, if you’re nervous your first day, you’re in good company

What a year we had!! And what a year to work on our martial arts mindset! We learned to adapt, modify, and overcome (and roll with the punches). From transitioning to our online Student Portal, doing a belt exam over Zoom and having a drive-thru belt ceremony, having all of our programs on Zoom, having weekly Zoom weapons classes from our friends at Championship Martial Arts in Orlando, being able to reach out to our martial artist friends from around the world as guest ins...tructors we made the best of it!! And out of all this, even with our doors being closed temporarily for several months, we have five students that earned their Shodan-Ho Black Belt that we are so proud of! We are full of gratitude and appreciation for all of our students and families, and wish you all health and happiness for the new year ahead. And we are so looking forward to having you back in the Academy! #bringon2021

Hi Komodo family! We appreciate your patience during this time. All of our instructional group sessions will be cancelled from today until November 27th due to the new provincial measures set in place yesterday. We will be providing live interactive Zoom sessions for our programs so students can still stay on track for their stripes at the end of the month (and the Belt grading in December) ... We will be providing the Zoom schedule and links in our private groups. We appreciate you all!

The Temporary Mandatory Face Covering (Mask) Bylaw is currently activated as of October 26, 2020. City bylaw now in effect. Masks are not required while doing physical activity, but will be required when in the lobby of our facility.

These boys are working HARD today for their junior Black Belt . . . This exam is strenuous and demanding, physically and mentally. These students have put so much time and energy over the last seven years to get to this point in their martial arts skills, their mindset, and their confidence. ... . . . This exam is a HUGE life event for them, and (whether they pass or fail- I’m writing this before their exam is done) will be a major accomplishment. Putting in the hard work to reach this level and grinding through a gruelling exam. . . . Can you imagine facing this challenge and rising to it, and breaking your own belief on how much you can truly accomplish before even being able to legally drive?? We can’t wait to see what these young students will bring and achieve in the world as they grow up, and we look forward to continuing your journey with us in our Black Belt class. Awesome to see this highlight reel of one of Sensei Steph’s formative teachers in martial arts. Coaches are there to help students train, achieve and inspire, and that’s what we strive to do every day! If you ever wondered who one of Sensei Steph’s inspirational coaches were as he was growing up and learning martial arts, Jean-Yves was certainly one of the top! He is one of the pioneers in full contact karate in to 80’s and brought kickboxing on the Canadian map!! Merci Jean-Yves for still kicking butt to this day!

Self-respect means that we appreciate ourselves and see our own worth! We don’t have to be perfect in order to have self-respect. In fact, self-respect means we can look at where we need to improve, without thinking less of ourselves. This month at The Komodo Academy, we are challenging our students to focus on a few techniques to improve, and then to compliment themselves for their hard work!
