On Wednesday, June 17, 2020 the Comox Valley Regional District and K’ómoks First Nation will come together to unveil a portion of Seal Bay Park’s new signage. D...ue to physical distancing and mass gathering restrictions currently in place this event will be live streamed via Facebook Live at 10am. Seal Bay Nature Park lies within the unceded traditional territory of the K’ómoks First Nation, and contains cultural and natural values meaningful to generations of K’ómoks families. Historically, Indigenous people visited the bay and forests for resource harvesting and to camp during canoe trips. The event celebrates the rich history and culture of the K’ómoks First Nation within the regional park. K’ómoks First Nations refer to these lands as Xwee Xwhya Luq (pronounced Zway Why Luck), meaning a place that has beauty, beauty that is not only seen but also felt. The new signage celebrates the traditional languages of the K’ómoks First Nation, and honours the relationship between K’ómoks and the Comox Valley Regional District. K'omoks First Nation

Honoring our K'ómoks survivors and all survivors of the residential school system on this special day. "September 30th has been declared Orange Shirt Day annually, in recognition of the harm the residential school system did to children's sense of self-esteem and well being, and as an affirmation of our commitment to ensure that everyone around us matters." #orangeshirtday #everychildmatters Read PHYLLIS' STORY: the original orange shirt here https://www.orangeshirtday.org/phyllis-story.html
