The calves have nurse cows they can drink from any time and are also fed additional milk twice a day in a long nipple trough. This little girl is taking a bit to learn how to drink on the trough so I wanted to make sure she got enough with a bottle, once she was done she followed me up and drank some more on the trough with the other calves. Happy (very belated) New Years from us at Kootenay Meadows! Our family and staff was able to take a bit of a pause during the holidays and recharge for the coming year. There is always chores to be done and milk to be processed but we tried to just do the necessities and enjoy some calm. Chores during the holidays are always my favourite, the world seems extra quiet and it’s a joy to spend time with the cows. This year has been big for us on the farm, and not jus...t because of the pandemic. We were very nervous at the beginning because we didn’t know if people would continue to choose local amidst so many other hardships. I have been so moved and empowered by the overwhelming support we have seen from the community, both in rallying to bring bottles back and the continued purchasing of our dairy products. I hope that one silver lining of the pandemic may be forcing us all to cook more at home and get reacquainted with how much amazing local food and produce there is in the Kootenays. 2020 was also the first year I took the leap into social media for the farm. In a time of lack of connection, the social media presence of the farm has made me feel more connected to the community than ever before. I sometimes worry I am not posting enough but feel I need to be authentic to myself and some days, at the end of a long day on the farm, in the plant or managing distribution I just don’t have it in me. However I love the engagement and appreciate all the questions, let me know what you would like to see more of. Our final big change this year has been taking the next step in transitioning to the next generation, me. My parents have moved off the farm, and to the disappointment of some, taken the Clydesdales with them. They still work extremely hard but are trying to ease back and enjoy their horses while I take on more of the responsibilities of the business. The horses will still make lots of appearances, have to give Budweiser a run for their money. So here is to more growth in 2021 along with more engagement and discovery of all the amazing things our Kootenay region has to offer. #kootenaylife #localagriculture See more
