Kootenay Pride 28.04.2021

Blast from my past Here are some stickers the Canadian Gay Activists Alliance put up on lamp poles in Vancouver some time around '72/73. I suggested these at a meeting, and thought nothing more of it, but Dick Rulens, the leader got these made up by the hundreds by the next meeting. I was surprised and delighted because we got a great reaction to them. Enjoy!

Touchstones Nelson - Museum of Art and History in partnership with Kootenay Pride and the Queer community, are mounting an historical exhibition on the legacy of LGBTQ2S+ folks in the Kootenays this summer, and are reaching out to the community for stories, photos and artifacts to include in the show. (photo: The Pride Parade down Baker Street, 2017. Courtesy of Kootenay Pride) In an effort to ensure that a multitude of voices are included and as many stories and perspective...s are represented, the exhibition working group is putting a callout for people who may have been involved with Kootenay Pride over the years or who are part of queer history in the area to reach out and share your stories, photos, videos, costumes, and ephemera, explains Touchstones Nelson’s Public Program Coordinator Stephanie Myers. The exhibition will explore the celebrations and the challenges facing the local Pride movement throughout the last 50 years, and highlight the considerable contribution the queer community has made to the region. The exhibit will include a film created by Watershed Productions, which will highlight the LGBTQ2S+ community over the decades. This short documentary will use archival materials in the collection at the Shawn Lamb Archives, as well as materials provided by the larger community. The stories of our queer history in the Kootenays remain largely untold, says Amy Bohigian, Director at Watershed Productions. It’s time to create a legacy piece that examines and celebrates how we arrived to a such a robust community today. Stories can be submitted to Museum Curator Arin Fay at [email protected] or 250-352-9813. The deadline for submissions is June 15, and can be submitted anonymously if desired.

If you'll recall, textiles artist Nichola Hare is "building on a woven wool and linen scarf that was featured in the BOA 2019 exhibit, proposing to create a ser...ies of wool/linen blankets and fabric yardage" for her #BentOnArtChallenge project, where she has used upwards of 700 unique threads (21k yards in total) in a single day! Have a look at some of her progress so far, and gain some perspective via her replies to our writing prompts below.. We work on our resilience in times of calm, but we build capacity for resilience in times of struggle. What value or skills have you gained in being challenged this past year? In the past year I've further developed my abilities to be adaptable, to make order out of chaos and to trust in the process. By focusing on what is in front of me each day, spending time out in the open air and with the trees, visiting the water, staying connected and checking in on those who are close to me. What do you do to cultivate joyfulness during difficult times? By following the truth within me, taking steps to further become who I am. Through asking myself What do I need to do to take care of myself right now? In reflecting on what has brought me joy in the past and taking steps to bring about those experiences again. By prioritizing what brings me into the present moment song, dance, rest, prayer, play and humor. The most difficult of circumstances have eventually lead me to my joy because I am given cause to express gratitude for the good that is in my life. These expressions of gratitude lead me to my joy. Don't miss our Bent On Art - Virtual Art Exhibition on Sunday March 28, where her full journey and finished product(s) will be revealed - the Zoom link has been created and can be found on the event page. #BentOnArtFest #NelsonBC #BentOnArtChallenge _______________________ #QueerArts #Textiles #QueerArtists #TextileArtist #QueerLife #TransArt #TransArtists #LGBTQArt #LGBTQArtist #Kootenays #WestKootenays #ArtsFest #ArtsFestival #VirtualFestival

Psychologists tend to see creativity exclusively as a mental process, [but] creativity is as much a cultural and social as it is a psychological event. -Mihal...y Csikszentmihalyi Creativity begets Community, and vice versa. Bent On Art is very passionate about both of these concepts, and the interconnection of the two. We are sorely missing the ability to gather physically for workshops, events and exhibitions this year - but we are thrilled to see everyone sharing creations daily for the #BentOnArtChallenge and participating in our (virtual) Life Drawing class, which started last Saturday. Note - it is not too late to register for subsequent Life Drawing classes (the remaining 3 Saturdays in March, 12:30-3pm PST), find the info/registration link in the comments below. Nor is it too late to take part in our daily challenge, as we have both weekly and grand prizes set aside for participants! Not feeling particularly creative or like you have the time to get involved? Follow along on Instagram, where we are sharing submitted content daily to our story reel - perhaps some inspiration will strike! #BentOnArtFest #NelsonBC #BentOnArtChallenge _______________________ #QueerArts #QueerArtists #QueerLife #TransArt #TransArtists #LGBTQArt #LGBTQArtist #Kootenays #WestKootenays #ArtsFest #ArtsFestival #VirtualFestival
