What a lovely surprise! Fresh Groceries! Special thanks to @jessica_q_lin, and her sisters and mom for coming to visit us today on a quiet Tuesday. Not only did they order takeout, they brought us all these amazingly fresh fruits, vegetables, and treats.... My wife and I are so touched and we are overwhelmed and humbled by the kind gesture and thoughtfulness. We are also thankful and grateful for everyone who supports us and allows us to stay open. It's February 14th and you know what that means! Happy Valentine's Day!!! When we think of Valentine's Day, we tend to only think of our significant others. ... Today, we just want to share with everyone all the love we have been blessed with and how fortunate we are. Picture 1: this is my lovely wife @jennifer.baek! She is the rock and backbone of this restaurant. She teaches me what unconditional love means everyday. Picture 2: These two amazing young women from Hamilton: @elizabethwongg and @_aishasallad recently sent me a T-shirt, Hat, and a personalized Mug and it is so thoughtful and generous. Thank you for supporting us and coming all the way from Hamilton to visit us. Picture 3: recently, I was going through some hardship and @carolannybanany and @bryckbreaker saw me outside in rough shape one day as they were driving and later on during the same day, came to the restaurant to drop off beers for me to cheer me up. Thank you for showing me love through your compassion. Seeing this letter helped me smile and the letter still sits inside the restaurant. Picture 4: @deenzmcbeenz you are so amazing. She saw my post of the masks hurting my ear. She decided to send us these amazing mask strap holders so that none of us would have pain while we worked. Thank you for being so caring. Happy 43rd Birthday!!! On February 9th, 1978, Korean Village Restaurant opened its doors for the very first time.... 43 years later, we are still open and still proudly making and providing Authentic Korean cuisine to the Koreatown community within the city of Toronto. The original owner, Ms Ok Re Lee (my amazing mom), had no previous restaurant experience and sacrificed so much to come to Canada and start a new life, let alone a new business. This is not just a business nor is it just a restaurant. This is the house my mother built. She built an institution of love and passion for Korean food and people. The first picture you see is our current sign. The second picture shows our original signage. Regardless of the different signs, one thing remains the same: the passion and the love for the food that we make for everyone who has ever supported us and continues to support us to this day. Saturday! It's Weekend time! It is such a beautiful day despite the brutal cold winds! Today, we were honored by a visit from an old friend from my days in school. We were both student leaders and Andy is still working with students and its so humbling to know that he's making a difference in the students' lives still to this day.... Thank you for visiting all the way from Welland. Today is his first time trying authentic Korean food (he tried Korean BBQ before) but I wanted him to try some Japchae (Stir Fried Glass Noodles) and Bibimbap with Chicken. Additionally, we got two members of "The Squad" to visit as well. These 2 young people have such huge hearts and coming by to support us means the world. Scarborough Bluffs!!! Today, my wife and I decided to visit Scarborough Bluffs and get away from everyday restaurant life. We ended up walking for over 3 Hours - 9KM give or take.... Our ears felt like they were about to snap off and we couldn't feel our faces, fingers, and toes but it was all worth it. We even got to see a raccoon in broad daylight along with swans, ducks, and geese. Starbucks Sunday! Today is the last day for this Starbucks located in the Annex (494 Bloor St. West). They will close their doors at 5:00PM.... The reason for sharing this is two-fold: 1. This store means so much to me personally. My mother loved Starbucks coffee and whenever I came to work, I would grab her coffee and it would bring her a bit of joy along with a jolt of caffeine. When my mother passed, I wanted to continue the tradition of bringing my mom coffee, even after she passed. The staff were so kind and understanding and would provide me fresh coffee as well as a decorated cup for my mother. Coming here everyday was healing. Before I started work, I would look up and wish my mother a good morning and starting my day with a hot cup of coffee would help me not dwell on my sadness and instead give me reassurance that I would get through the day. 2. The Staff. These people are not just baristas or employees. These people are good people. Correction, these people are amazing human beings. They have no idea how much they helped me heal and move forward and one of the reasons why our restaurant is still open is because of these people. Coming here was my way to catch a breather as well starting my day on a positive note. Some of the staff have supported us as well before the lockdown and during the lockdown. They would come for takeout and seeing them meant the world. On behalf of the community, the Annex neighborhood, and all the people that walked through this very location, Thank You. Happy Birthday Mom!!! Time keeps passing and today is a reminder of how lucky I am to have had such a wonderful mother in my life. My birthday was yesterday, and ever since she passed away in 2019, celebrating my birthday has been difficult since our birthdays are a day apart.... Although this account is for the restaurant, I want to share with everyone just how beautiful she was and how she was loved by so many people. Even today, we received messages today from people who told me they miss my mom and had no clue it was her Birthday today. She is the reason Korean Village Restaurant was born and continues to serve Authentic Korean food to so many amazing people from all over the world. I miss you every single day. I wish you were here. I am glad you are resting peacefully. I wish she could see the amount of love and support we received throughout 2020 and now. Feeding the Frontliners during the holidays!!! Last night, we had the honor of making meals and donating them to Toronto Western Hospital - Emergency Department (ER). They are super busy and working harder than ever to keep people safe, alive, and healthy. Special thanks to @eagle_eye_cowan and Caitlin (who only had a 15 minute break and used that time to accept the meals and set them all up in their breakroom. ... Special thanks to P.A.T. Supermarket for providing delicious treats to give along with the meals. Lastly, special thanks for everyone's support, especially during this month. So many amazing people purchased gift cards, sent us financial donations, and some people came to make massive orders all for the purpose of making sure we stay open. Honestly, it is because of the massive outpouring of support, we can afford to try and give back as much as we can. My mother would always help the community whether or not business was good or not. Takeout / Delivery Time....Again!!! Last night, I personally had one of the most memorable Friday dinner services ever!!! Although we didn't reach full capacity, let alone half, we had so many people who have supported us over the years come and visit knowing that we would be going back to phase 2 starting today. Some people who visited last week and even a few days ago, came back last night to show their love and support.... Bunches and Bunches of Grapes!!! If you have ever walked through our doors, you might have seen (or missed) the long hanging grapevine above the entrance. These concord grapes are as organic as you can get! If anyone is in the area, feel free to grab some grapes for yourself or for others who might want some! For the past 25 years, these grapes would grow over time during the summer months (look at all the pictures, they start out green). My mom would make her own homemade ...wine. It tasted funky but all you needed was one or two sips to get you mellowed out. Seeing these grapes is a small reminder that life keeps going on and moving forward. What a beautiful day! People are trying to resume everyday normal activities as we are just starting to go back (trying to at least) to some sort of normalcy. Yesterday, I had a chance to do something I have been waiting for 5 months to do: visit my mom. Many people want to go on vacations, eat inside restaurants, go places, but for me, first thing I needed to do was go see my mother. It's funny but I always brought my mom coffee whenever she wanted one but I never got a cha...nce to have coffee with her, until yesterday. Special thanks to #starbucks staff (Annex location) for giving me a small amount of coffee for my mom. They even drew a pretty flower on top of her cup and they didn't even know that she loved flowers more than any material good. After visiting her, my wife and I went to the Keg and I lost my emotions when they brought out the French Onion Soup. It was her favorite non-Korean soup and the only reason she loved going there was for the soup; the steaks were secondary. Special thanks to #thekegmansion staff for going above and beyond and making our visit memorable. I think the staff knew something was up when I started to just cry in front of the bowl of soup. Although this account is for Korean Village Restaurant, I wanted to show everyone that this Restaurant has a story and it starts with its founder. My mom, Ms. Ok Re Lee started this Restaurant since 1978. This Restaurant is the house that she built. Now, she rests peacefully in another house that somebody else built. Seeing my mom gave me much needed perspective. It reminded my why she loved the Restaurant. Being able to provide authentic Korean Cuisine as well as the people whom she encountered. She never saw people as customers. She treated everyone with genuine warmth and expressed love through her food. I hope that anyone who reads this, will be able to enjoy a cup of coffee, tea, or just a conversation with someone you love. I look forward to having coffee with my mom again really soon. Stage 3...Finally!!! This is a story I need to share with everyone. It involves community, businesses, the power of collaboration, and people coming together and helping one another. For the past 8 years, I have had the honor of being the Chairman for the Koreatown BIA. We wanted to help all the businesses before stage 3 was in effect. I came up with an idea which was fully supported by all the board members to provide as much PPE to as many businesses so that they can be e...quipped to open up fully and safely to the public. We were able to deliver about 150 packages to all the local businesses in Koreatown. Each package contained: Masks, Latex Gloves, Hand Sanitizer, Face Shields, Social Distancing Stickers and information from the City of Toronto. Special thanks goes out to the following: The Koreatown BIA Board Members for their support, Choong Ho Park (our Coordinator who helped distribute these packages with me under scorching heat), my lovely wife Jennifer (who helped arrange and package all the PPE into individual bags), to our suppliers (they gave us such an amazing deal that they sold us the PPE literally at cost).
